So just like the title says, when I switch the hazard lights on, everything works, exterior lights and interior lights but when I use the indicator stalk nothing happens. Now I was thinking it might be something to do with the stalk itself but then I noticed a wire hanging down from the dash which is green and white. It had a cylindrical connector as if it had another wire that plugged into it. After looking for a couple of hours I couldn't find any other bare wire though. Any suggestions as to what it could be? Everything was working fine yesterday.

Might be the flasher relay, depending on what age the car is it will be a separate one to the hazards.

I've checked the hazard switch and I've also checked both flasher units which work fine. Also the indicators now work when the engine is on but not when only the ignition is on. It's a 1988 mayfair if that helps. I haven't checked the flasher relay.

They should work with the ignition switch at position 1, if not has someone monkey'd around with the wiring? The fact they work with the engine on (position 2) means the circuit works, but sounds like someone has moved the feed from the fuse box

A running engine will increase the voltage. I assume it has  separate hazard and indicator flashers?

An indicator flasher should fail with the lights on but not flashing, but you could replace it with a paperclip, or bit of wire, to see if it's a faulty flasher. Also check that all bulbs light at normal brightness using the hazards.
