The bolts sound like a repair by a previous owner, and if properly done should be ok. Probably the taped hole is as you say too.

If the pin is too loose there may be wear on the other parts. I don't see why you can't try drilling out to the next size up and fit a larger pin. Engineering suppliers will call them roll pins or spiral pins.

Yeah that's what it look like, the bolt which is currently in measures 4.81mm so may try and ease a 5mm bolt in and see if that takes to the housing with its own cut thread.

The other hole which I am on about is about half way down the housing on the left hand side? It is on photos of new housings I just wondered if it was a point to add a grease nipple.

And which way is best to knock the current pin out from, underneath the vehicle or above in the cabin? I think I shall try a new pin and see if I can see any other signs of wear, and then if so I'll try your method of drilling and next size up.

There was no official grease nipple hole and pumping the thing full of grease would not help the gear change at all. I think it was drilled just to inject oil or grease from a can occasionally.

Sometimes a pin is in a stepped hole and will only come out from one side. As far as I recall, this one will come out either way, just choose which is most convenient for working on it. That part of a Mini is usually filthy.

Oh, and there may be provision for a reversing light switch and on German models a 4th gear switch, which may possibly be something to do with the msterious hole.

Ah yes that's what it could be it looks like a reversing switch is fitted the other side but that's what the other hole must be.

Yes hoping to be able to do it from above if I am able to put into gear and then remove the lever so the C-pin is then accessible.

After trying to get the C-pin out within the gear linkage housing and not succeeding and deciding against removing from the car, I have decided to leave this until the winter, and put a temporary fix in place.

I first tried to re-tap the hole the pins originally would have located in to an M6, but due to lack of room was unsuccessful.

So I then decided to us an M5 screw with 2 opposite flats ground down to just under the dimension of the slot in the gear lever. Cleaned, greased and reassembled with the M5 screw fitted from the inside out as seen in the attachment.

Seems to have done the trick for the time being, and a fairly quick temporary solution, no problems when driving.
