Evening all!

Just bought myself a new project, It's a lovely silver Austin Mini It's a 1989 City E model with an engine swap to a 1275cc from its original 998cc

The plan is to get this looking original and in a great condition. I have looked online for photos of a 1989 City E and have turned up lots of results all differ

Mine has chrome wing mirrors, 8 spoke typical Mini alloys (12") ,chrome windscreen wiper arms and a black grill

I'm interested to know how this rolled out of the factory to restore to that spec

Thanks for your time all!

Photos will follow!

Just like the one in this link except it should have Nimbus Grey coloured bumpers instead of the chrome ones.

Hubcaps, interior and other trim are all correct.

Cheers

I had one in Oyster beige about 15 years ago. It was completly original and untouched and in immaculate condition.

The lad i sold it to had it resprayed red with a white roof and fitted lots of aftermarket parts like bucket seats and 13" starmags. I thought it was a real shame.

It was still on the road until January 2014 according to DVLA

It is such a shame I get that people want to make it personal but it's a down grade to a collector or someone that wants stock mini

What radio would it have been fitted with? I bought mine with a radio and speakers in the boot that look old and the speakers I think are standard.

The speakers are Maystar 50w and the head unit is a Grundig 304 FM Tuner

Is that the correct standard set up?

Thanks

I'm not sure the City had a radio fitted as standard?

Quite possibly might have been dealer fitted or just fitted by a previous owner.

I know a Mayfair of the same vintage would have had the small pod type speakers.

It's not much but this might help a little with regards to the spec

The interior photo of the City E you sent the other day does have the radio fitter which is what made me question it and want to refit it, the speakers look very similar to mine so ill keep those just need to find an original radio or something period

Thanks again!

I may still have a few parts left from when I Cooperised my 89 city - arches, steering wheel brakes etc

Rich: the first thing to do is to work out IF the car is a Mini City E.... or more than likely a Mini City.

(the car in the advert is a City & not a city E)

If the insurance people claim it's the wrong model to save time & effort just nod & agree with whichever one they say it is -been there, wore the tea-shirt, eat the pie etc etc.

The City E (think the E was for economy as they had a 2.95 final drive). It was made up till Aug '88 though there are examples of City E not registered untill 1989 -they had a four spoke steering wheel, & probably a central mounted speedo.

The City had a 3.1 final drive, 3 spoke steering wheel, the seats were crayon (grey with flecks of aqua, yellow, purple, & red) & had front headrests, & a line of sight 2 dial dash.

I might still have some original stuff left over from my '89 City so send me a message if you need anything ( by that i mean bits of trim etc not 1380 engines, alcohol, or wanton women!).

Ben, is it just me?,.... the bumpers on the yellow City seem to be black!

Like you i thought that Nimbus grey bumpers were standard on the City (& black on the Mayfair?).
