50-55mph is a nice speed for an old 850, on A and B roads its a nice drive, dual carriageways and motorways its less happy but will cruise - if that's the correct description for a 53 year old Mini - mixing with modern superminis and GTIs. I always seem to compare it with more modern A plus 998 and 1275 single and multipoint injected Minis Ive owned but thats not really a fair comparison. Its a small capacity engine in a very old car, designed for very different times when it was cutting edge compared to sidevalve Morris Minors , Ford Populars and the like.
If I want to drive quckly I have a modern powerful Tdi. Mini driving these days, for me anyhow is about a pleasurable drive in nice weather with no pressures on time, just enjoying the experience.

My nan used to have a 850 every so often she used to say it was not running the same so my dad used to take it and rag the **** out of it untill it was screaming and take it back ,she was always happy with it again.its still in there garage not been used in years
Once known in the garage trade as taking the car out for an 'Italian service'

The 850 is truly the epitome of the classic Mini. It has the retro charm and driving experience which one would want from driving a classic car.
I have to say that a highly modified Mini is often the worst of all things. It doesn't drive like an old classic car and it doesn't drive or go like a modern car. Whereas with an 850 you have a real classic car which reflects what driving was like in the 1960's. I know that there is more classic driving pleasure from driving an original Mini than from driving a late MPI with the nasty 13" wheels and modern tyres.
