I've got an electronic speedo fitted (not Smiths).

Since I don't have a mechanical takeoff I fitted a magnetic pickup and 12 magnets around the pot joint.

Easy to calibrate and fit and none of the GPS legalities to worry about.

For those wanting a bit more info on GPS issues and legalities, please see the old thread linked below.

Off hand I forget who has them, but there is an after market electronic speedo that uses both GPS and a sensor. It defaults to the GPS signal and when the signal gets 'iffy' then it works from the sensor, once it can get a decent GPS Signal, it swaps back. Apparently, it's all seamless. I'll see if I can find it again.

I think the issue of legality would vary from country to country, not sure and I not going there, but I would suggest that who ever may be contemplating a conversion, seek some proper advice and information from the relevant vehicle standards authorities.

As we all should regarding most vehicle modifications.

this sounds like the ideal solution.

For those that are interested here's a photo of the magnets attached to the pot joint.

Clean and rough surface with a dremel and acetone, and then place magnets fairly evenly and coat with exopy resin. Attach sensor.

I know its not strictly to do with the title of this thread. I have always thought about installing abs on a mini and thought about inboard sensor rings to detect wheel speed. Your idea of sticking magnets onto the pot join achieves what I was thinking about possibly a custom pot joint with a bolt on sensor ring.
