hi I am building a custom moke which has an MG Metro engine with a pre engaged starter motor and a suitable pre engaged loom. The pre engaged starter solenoid has a large spade and small spade connection. the small spade is currently wired to the white red wire from the ignition switch. I am unsure where to wire the large spade connector to? the wiring diagram shows this going to the positive terminal of the coil. I also have a white wire going to the positive terminal of the coil. with this wired as described the engine starts but the starter motor continues to run, it does turn off. any ideas what I am doing wrong please?

You need to wire the 12v feed from the start position on the ignition switch to a 4 terminal relay, as the pre-engaged starter draws more current than the ignition contacts can take, that why the pre-engaged starter cars came from the factory with the relay fitted.

85 = earth

86 = 12v switched from the start position on the ignition switch

30 = 12v feed into relay

87 = wire out to the solenoid

Wired as above would only power the solenoid when the key is held in the start position

ok will do, but can you provide some more explaination, do I connect 87 to the large or small spade terminal on the solenoid, you seem to suggest I only use one terminal spade terminal on the solenoid.  Do I need to wire the white wire to the +  coil, and is the large spade terminal wired to the positive of the coil?

do you know why the starter is remaining on with the current wiring setup?

See the solenoid on the left of the JPG linked below.  The large terminal should get the trigger signal from the Bosch/ISO relay (terminal 87).

Isn't the small terminal only used if you have a ballast ignition?

Sorted it, changed the white red from the small spade to the large one. Do you think the new low power pre engaged starters will still cause issues with the ignition switch contacts?

Eventually yes the ignition switch contacts won't like the pre-engaged solenoid current for long, coil white is a 12v feed to the + terminal of the coil from the ignition switcg.

... and white/yellow is a wire connected between the solenoid small terminal and the coil (+) terminal.  It is only there when you have a ballast ignition system.  It is not needed with a standard ignition coil.
