My coolant sensor is plumbed into the heater hose, between the thermostat housing and the heater control valve. Is this the normal position on a JDM SPI? It seems it would only detect the correct temp when the heater valve is open. Thanks, any help is much appreciated.

I maybe wrong but I'm sure it's supposed to be under the inlet manifold.

Right let's clear this up, what year is it ?
Does it have a distributor or coil pack ?

Steve220 under inlet manifold is SPi system and earlier JDM, I'm suspecting post 1996 model....

Thanks for the replies!

It is a 1995

A/C

Automatic

Distributor ignition

Engine number 12A2DJ35322064

I believe the motor and gearbox are original.

Well that's torn it!
Is it definitely the water hose we are seeing?

Should be as Steve220 wrote be under the inlet manifold....for engine coolant temperature sensor. You should be able to reach down on rhs (as you lean in) and feel it there.

It is underneath the intake manifold, shown on the left:

I found the CTS under the manifold, thanks Rocket. Wiring appears intact.

So, I wonder what that other sender is for. Hmm.

Trace it, does it go back to the original loom? What are the colour of the wires inside?

Well, mine is a Japanese 1994 with manual gearbox and it does not have that.

Mine is 98 JDM, doesn't have this sensor.

Do you have an additional temp gauge installed in the car?

No additional temp gauge. There is a dash mounted switch to turn on the electric fan in the left wing. I will try to trace the wires.

Hmm... I wonder if the radiator is not original an does not have the provision for the fan thermal switch. Check behind the grille, the front lower corner of the radiator for two blade connectors on the plug switch. See  the picture. There should be a black wire and a light green/white wire connected there.
