This is a recurring discussion.

That halfords one holds good pressure for about 5 mins. Millers golden film 20/50 holds good pressure for ages and is the same price. Valvoline is great but expensive. Millers 20/50 all good.

Classic oils do an own brand 20/50 which they say is a Valvoline VR1 clone at half the price. I've not tried it yet but I'd be interested to know if anyone has.

The Wilko's classic oil isn't quite the same as Halfords classic or comma classic but I've found it holds reasonable pressure over time. It's relatively cheap too. Most of the time I use Halfords classic though.

Minispares do a budget 20/50 oil now with the gearbox additive.

Not sure it will be any good for the cat converter though on the MPI

I've used Millers Classic Mini Oil along with Valvoline VR1, wouldn't use anything else

It is not just how the pressure holds up, the best oils also have a high zddp level.

I'll certainly be buying and pouring some into my 998 in the next couple of weeks. I presume it'll do at least as well as the Halfords and it seems a few pennies cheaper and promises more zinc.

but for better gearchanges, etc you can use this Millers CTV 20-50w semi synthetic oil produced especially for Minis where it needs to lubricate both engine and gearbox parts giving the neccessary coating and protection. Semi synthetic has a long life with maximum working temperature of 130-140c (except on rebuilt engines where pistons must be allowed to bed in first using the non synthetic oil above).

I was told by millers technical department to change ctv if you exceed 110c

the only problem with the Halfords oil is what to do with all those lovely tins that you dont throw away because they're a proper tin and may come in useful
