I have a 1989 Japanese spec Mini. I just change the entire exhaust with all new pipes & fixings. The pipe to manifold connection is flared pipe type. From what I can tell, there isn't a gasket between the pipe & manifold. I searched all the part suppliers online but didn't see a gasket in the part break downs. After clamping them together I'm not getting a complete seal. What can be done to get a better seal?

You need to make sure that the flanges of the manifold and down pipe are aligned and seating properly and to apply a smear of exhaust sealing paste to the joint surface, and then clamp it up. Also check that the engine mounts and stabiliser bushes are in good shape, as excessive movement of the engine will strain on the joint causing it to blow.

Thanks for the quick reply. I kind of thought that might be what I needed to do. I've never seen an exhaust that didn't have some sort of gasket or packing. This is my first Mini. Everything else I've worked on was made in America.

Good luck with getting it to seal.  You may need to slacken the mounting for the bottom of the down pipe to get it to align with the manifold.  If it won't,  why not fit an LCB manifold and system to make it breath a little easier!

I've thought about the LCB manifold but right now I am just trying to get it in decent running condition as quickly as possible so I can finish getting the inspection & papers I need to get a Texas title. This car is fresh of the boat from Japan. I found a place that would let it pass inspection. The next thing I have to do is take it to the police station so they can verify that it wasn't stolen. That will give me the last form I need to get the title. Then I can get it registered and put my plates on. After that I will fix all the little things that need fixing. Once that's done I can start having fun modifying and customizing.
