This is rich69s eldest son, I need some back up. My dad wants to fit an Austin allegro engine in the mini which I think would be sacrelidge as it is one of the few original parts of the car. Back up appreciated

The original engine are quite pedestrian and it could always be fitted back in to retain originality in the future

Sorry the reg no doesn't ring any bells,  but a photo might if you have one?  I was in the B'ham Mini owners club and Owen Motoring Club for a while and used to do some rally marshalling so may have seen it around and about.

The Mk1 Golf GTI were quite something back in the day,  so not a bad swap for a 1275GT!

That's what I keep telling my son,  but he wants the mini to be exactly as it was when I used to drive it!  Can't get through to him that it's just a 1275 A series that could just as easily ended up in a 1275GT back in the day!  I have every intention of keeping the 850 and m/w box to put it back to original.  It's a great little engine even with 110k on it,  and still starts on the button and used to go surprisingly well with twin 11/4SU's and an LCB,  just needs hardened valve seats.

I need to get some scanned

Yes less than 10years old and rotten. The GTI was the first of many and sparked my fondness for German engineering

Build the 1275 onto a MW box and everyones happy.

What style are you going for as a finished look? What are you doing to the interior

Yes I have a couple of German cars, one half Italian and German (our motorhome) and the Mini.

I was thinking of building it as a replica of the Britax Cooper S touring cars,  but that has already been done,  so need to come up with a new plan.  I will be reverting to mk1 rear lights, grille and bumpers,  not sure about the interior yet,  it's a blank canvas,  but probably go with a newton commercial repro interior with low back bucket seats.  At the moment it's got some 1970's Datsun or Toyota high back recliner seats which were ok,  but have seen better days.  The immediate plan is to get the shell repaired while I collect the parts required and decide on the spec.

Had half day working on the mini,  mainly lying on my back wrestling with a 30 year old LCB and exhaust system,  had to resort to the grinder in the end.  Managed to get the engine ready for removal,  but couldn't get enough clearance with the carbs and LCB still on the engine,  so they are now off and engine loose ready for the hoist,  but that will have to wait until next Saturday now.  Also managed to win a Miller long arm spot welder on eBay,  so hopefully I will be able to get a factory look when I start putting it back together.

Front Chopped but will be replaced with a new metal front end and mk1 front panel.  More photos to follow when Photobucket starts to play nicely.

Took the engine out tonight complete with radiator, came out easily once the carbs and LCB were removed. Even made a wooden trolley to stand it on in the shed. One thing I wasn't expecting was to see how much the sump guard has pushed up the front sub frame cross member, will have to take some measurements to see if it has pulled the sides in and whether I can persuade it to go back...

I am sure, if the sub frame is sound and not rusty that edge will pull down with a bit of heat and force. Just make sure it is square afterwards though.

Thanks Slidehammer,  yes hopefully it will come back into shape,  it does look like the whole channel is bowed upwards in the centre,  but I haven't had the opportunity to put a straight edge or tape measure across it yet.  The bottom flange has bent the most.  There doesn't appear to be any rust in the front sub-frame though,  a testament to the many and varied oil leaks.  The sump guard has been pushed up either from jacking the car up on it,  or in an off road excursion...

The less said about the dodgy timber seat sub frames the better! Went through a few MOTs like that too! Seats are still quite comfy, just not attached to much :o

Just checked the date on the windscreen, it's from Q4 '62 (dot over the T in Triplex and a dot under the O in toughened) which would be about right as the car was first registered in May '63.

Not made much progress since hoiking the engine out on Monday evening.

Taking the original 850 out to prepare the shell for the roll over jig.  I intend to overhaul it with hardened valve seats and will have a look at the bores while it's stripped.  Always leaked more oil than it burned,  so there is life in it,  but would like to build my spare 1275 into a fast road 1293 or 1330 always thought 1380's were too rough running and highly stressed,   but that's just me.

850 hanging about...

The scaffold poles and key clamp fittings have arrived to make a roll over spit, doubt I will haven't saved much against a bought spit, but as I have limited space,  I needed to make a bespoke one.  Just hope my plan works and I don't end up with a rolly-polly mini sat on its roof stuck in the garage!

The scaffold tubes under the car reminded me of an e-type exhaust,  now there's an idea.....

No room at the inn...

E-type quad exhaust - or is it just me?

Slightly out of sequence,  but here is a video of the engine running for the first time in over 10 years:

and of the mini moving under its own power in over 20 years with my son having his first driving lesson on clutch control in it (on private land of course!)
