Morning all,

I will be needing some new boots on my 10" reverse rims shortly and thought i would ask opinions on the best make to buy for road use and the widest tyre they will take ?

The old tyres coming off are 145`s and i have been told this is as wide as you can fit on a 4.5 rim ?

The mini will be fitted with a 1275cc fast road spec engine so looking for maximum grip but trying to keep the car looking as original / period as possible .

I was also advised to ditch the inner tube !

As always your help is much appreciated  ;D

Hi, Yokohama A008 in 165/70-10 are a very good tyre at a reasonable price. I have personally used them with 4.5" reverse rims and they behaved well other than being a bit slippery in the wet when pushed but not lethal like the Falken crap . I`m now waiting for the Falken lovers to slate me but the only people that like them drive like granny's :)

I have also used the Yokohama A032R and found them to be excellent all round but they wore very quickly. It was less than 2000 miles for the fronts and the rears were quite chewed up on the outer edges but there was a track day in that and they were soft compound.

I`m actually using Dunlop Aquajets  in 145/70-10 at the moment as I had a very good deal and they look "period" on my car with the reverse rims. They felt a bit squirmy to start with due to the deep radial tread grooves but i have to say they are excellent in the wet and just seem to keep on gripping.

So personally I would go for Yoko A032R for max grip, Yoko A008 for a happy medium, Aquajets in 165 for maxgrip if you have a mk1/2 and want the period look badly enough to spend £111 each on tyres.

There is also Dunlop R7`s in 165/70-10 and word of a new tyre from Blockleys on the horizon but I can`t express my opinion as I have not used them.

I can however express my opinion on Falken SN-807 145/80-10 and they are nasty and only fit for trailer tyres and the Falken old model 165/60-12 , Nasty in the wet and couldn`t get traction during hard acceleration in 2nd gear in the DRY.

It all depends on what you can afford. Yoko A008s are a good all-round tyre at a decent price. I had Falkens on my old Mayfair before the A008s (both on Reverse Rims) and I had no issues in the wet but then I didn't push too hard (didn't fancy meeting a ditch) so can't comment on when they break away. I would have loved Dunlop Aquajets but they're not cheap at all. The A032 is a lovely looking tyre and they grip like s**t to a blanket. However they're also extremely soft so will deteriorate fairly rapidly if used every day on British Roads. However, for a show car that doesn't do many miles or goes on the track, they're perfect.

You pays your money and takes your choice, but the Yoko A008 is a great all-rounder.

Dunlop R7 are probably the best 'period' looking tyre with good grip (look like the Dunlop racing CR65 tread, originally re-produced for the Japanese classic Mini market) but the wear rate is quite high and they are expensive.

Chris,

4.5 inch reverse rims are ideal for using together with drum brakes all round (or 7 inch Cooper discs on front). This gives essentially same wheel spacing as 4.5 std S (non-reverse) rims fitted to the 7.5 inch disc brake set-up. So the wheels are just within the wheel arches, and don't need spats.

For use in wet and dry I find the 145x10 tyres give good and predictable handling.

To get the best out of this set up the wheel geometry with about 0.5 to 1 deg negative camber & 1/8 toe-out on front wheels and zero camber with about 1/8 toe-in on the back wheels.

I have drums with spacers built in on the rear and 7.5" discs & calipers on the front, by my calculations with the reverse 4.5j reverse rims and 165 tyres i will need small arches (1 or 2 ").

This is the look i want but not sure of the perfect period arches to use yet ?

I know the car is a mk1 and probably should be left standard so i am trying to compromise and keep the period look wheels etc...

Thanks for all the advise on tyre choice, i have looked into each one mentioned and the Yoko A008 165 70 10`s look like the best and most cost effective option for me  ;D

I currently also have another thread running about powder coating my rims and trying to match OEW colours if you have any advise to give ?

The reverse rim wheel offset when used with S discs, together with a well tuned 1275 will cause torque steer.

Make sure you fit a big steering wheel.

+1 for that. Foot down hard in second gear and get ready for the snatching and the weaving.

Although still better than a mini on 13" wheels. I have owned an S pack in my opinion the driving experience was vague at best with hard steering and the constant tram lining was enough to send it on again after a short while.

They look nice though :)

PS. I love my "bus" steering wheel. I`ve even got one fitted to my clubby.

I've got far wider offset 10's on a032's and have no tramlining issues.. (and a smaller momo wheel)

but not lethal like the Falken crap . I`m now waiting for the Falken lovers to slate me but the only people that like them drive like granny's :)

I Like my falken ZE 914's on the 1330. Can't say I have a grip issue at all.
I , however, can't comment on the old flaken tyres. But the new ones really aren't lethal at all. And I did do a back to back test with  yoko 008's on 12 inch rims.

I'm running the Falken 145x10 Sinceras on 4.5 inch S rims, they look traditional and are about the only tyre in this size at a sensible price.

Grip in the rain is not the ultimate, but very predictable and in some ways I now prefer driving on wet roads around town...
