I have a further question on rear brakes with the car clear of the ground if I pull the rear wheels in and out I have about half a centimeter free play. Is this normal?
no.
look for where the play is. most likely the radius arm bush.

Thanks Nick, so if I find the arm moving its the radius arm bush if not then its further back, ie rear bearings?

Well if your wheel is moving as much as you say it is unlikely to be the bearings as there would not be any bearing left.
bearing play will show as motion in all directions. 12-6 9-3 11-5 etc (numbers on a clock face) radius arm is only in and out at 9 right side of car and 3 left side.

Ok, thanks I'll investigate further this morning.

New to the forum and need some advice on Brakes. I am planning on buying a Mini Clubman 1979. It has dums on the front and I would like to swap out to discs. I have seen some Metro/Turbo front hubs and flanges on ebay. Would these fit as a direct swap over? They have the ball joints already in on both sets.
Thanks to anyone who can give me the answer. Don't want to buy these and find out later they don't fit, also brakes are very important and need to be right.

I see you're a new member, to get a better response you're better off starting a new thread in the technical section with the heading reflecting your question rather than coming in halfway through someone else's thread.New to the forum and need some advice on Brakes. depending on what you are exactly looking at metro hub assys are not a direct replacement for a Mini hub assy. some parts can be used. but little with out some machining and conversion pipes.

When you chuck in the discs, calipers, pads and CV joints the Ebay offering doesn't look such a bargain.
If it has drums I'm assuming it also has 10 inch wheels, anything other than the above* and you'd have to chuck new wheels and tyres in to the equation.
*not totally true - but as a straight forward bolt on option it is. You should consider new front hoses and spacing out the rear wheels by some method - even with the 7.5" kit.
.... and also, click the link in my siggy (vvv underneath vvv) if you're thinking hitting your piggy bank.

not enough info in that advert. have they modded Mini hubs? if so can they confirm the pivot points are in the correct position? if they are actually Metro hubs then they are not suitable. and then there is the wheel issue.
join TMF+ and get a 7.5% discount from Minispares and get the kit linked above.
