Hi guys, we were out at the weekend and my mate got a puncture. Neither of us carry a spare; we both have an inflator canister. The problem was the puncture happened on a dual carriageway and the sidewall was ripped out and they  haven't invented a can that will replace a tyre sidewall. It got me thinking because we're going to France later this year and I don't want to get stuck in the Alps so I've decided to try and carry a spare wheel. I have 13x7 Ultralites fitted with 175/50 R13 Yokohama , I have the 7.5 gallon tank so I don't have a lot of room in the boot when its full of luggage, what have you used to match up with the rolling radius or is there some sort of space saver spare available? I really need some suggestions on this one.

How does it work, is it deflated and you need to inflate it? Has anyone a picture of it?

It's just a thin wheel that sits in the tyre well in the boot.

I'm pretty sure that the standard spare for an MPi with 13" wheels is a 12" wheel with a 145/70 x 12 tyre which fits in the spare wheel well, there are usually some for sale on Ebay, normally unused because by definition they are for emergency use only.

The rolling diameter is near enough between all 10, 12 and 13" classic Mini wheels as the tyre wall just gets lower profile/height as the rim diameter goes up........a standard steel Mini wheel and normal 145 tyre will be fine as a spare and was used on the MPi.

 

Modern narrow spacesavers are for temporary use to get you home or to a garage and come with a speed restriction anyway.

My new BMW MINI has 17" wheels (215/40 x 17) and comes with an optional 115/70x15 spacesaver spare!

This steel wheel and tyre was standard fitment for 12" wheel Minis from around 1984 - 1996 that didn't have alloys as standard, e.g City, Mayfair, Sprite etc.

What about a roof rack like the old rally cars. Mini Mail used to do them.

I've never seen a space saver for a mini if i'm honest. Mine is a 12" spare wheel.

Once minis started getting alloy wheels the spare was still a 12in steel wheel with a 145/70 tyre. They were then marked with 80kph or 50mph when installed due to the different wheel/ tyre size on an axle when in use. So effectively a space saver for the 13 inch shod MPi.
So you just need to pick up a 12in steel wheel fit a 145/70 tyre and you have a useable spare that will fit in the wheel well. And yes the wheel will fit fully inflated and ready to go. Put 30psi pressure.

Yeah, Rover never did a space saver for the mini and there isn't a space saver available for any other car with a 4x4inch pcd.
