I'm considering fitting a set of 10" cooper steel wheels to my completely standard 1981 mini currently running drum brakes all round,I just want to know weather I can fit either the 3.5" wide cooper wheels or the 4.5" wide wheels without having to fit any wheel arch extensions and weather the wheels would fit over my standard drums and if they fit could the wheels end up rubbing on the arch at all?

3.5 S rims will not fit, 'reverse rim' Cooper wheels in 4.5 will be fine on drums, they should not need arches with 145 tyres, 165 will give you a little 'poke', but nothing excessive. Best to try to borrow an example of what you want to fit so you can be 100%

4.5" cooper s rims will fit without arches.

Now you will have to space the rear drums and more than likely the front but as you see no arches. I have converted my car to Cooper s discs and calipers up front.

That looks really nice with the cooper wheels fitted, are these reverse rims or non reverse rims? Also do they rub at all when your mini is on full lock

Non reverse wheels and no on the disc conversion they do not foul on full lock. The rear you will need to fit spacers otherwise they will foul on the shock absorbers.

The tyres are 165 yokos by the way.

You have a couple of options if you don't want wheel arches:
3.5 or 4.5" Cooper S wheels with wide spacer drums front and back (and longer wheel studs etc)
3.5 or 4.5" Cooper S wheels with 7.5" discs front and wide spacer drums back
Or
4.5" Reverse "Cooper S" wheels with flat drums front and back. Their part number is LP918. I had these on my car with 145 tyres and they fitted nicely:

You could also get some Cooper style full hubcaps if you want a different look. The 3.5" Cooper (997 & 998) wheels were identical to the basic cars.

in the red., the reverse rims have a bigger offset which will make them stick out. watch out when buying them as most people label them as cooper s reverse rims but it's either reverse rims number or cooper s.

4.5" Reverse "Cooper S" wheels with flat drums front and back. Their part number is LP918.

Later reverse rims often have AHT 182 stamped in one of the depressions between the studs but the wheel spec. is the same

Thanks for the speedy reply!

I will probably buy brand new ones as I want them in black.

What size spacer do I need for the back? My rear drums are old and tired so I want to replace them for extra faith I'm stopping the car!

Cheers

Hi guys

Will the steel wheels that MiniSport sell fit correctly or will I need to find some original reverse steel wheels from eBay?

Thanks

The 4.5" minisport ones will be exactly the same fit as the original Cooper S ones. As above, this means 7.5" discs at the front, and spacer drums at the rear. The spacer is cast into the brake drum, if you have discs on the front you should have these already..
