Im inthe middle of rebuilding my front subframe and the hub assemblies.

I am fitting new ball joints but in taking the ball joint holder nut on and off to find the correct amount of shims to use the thread on the hub has been cross threaded. I now cant get the nut back on properly.

I obviously dont want to have to replace the whole hub assembly as it has been cleaned, painted, new bearing fitted etc....

is the only solution retapping the thread? and if so does anyone know where i could get on ethat big from or have one i could borrow and i wold pay all postage costs.

What size is the thread? is it 1" 5/16th?

Thanks for looking

Dan

absolutely cop all chance getting one off the shelf, and getting one made would probably cost you 3 or 4 times the cost of a hub, and would not be as safe either.

Your chances of finding that die to rethread the hub are slim to none. If you found it... you probably couldn't afford it. Big dies = big money.

Instead, call around to industrial suppliers (not DIY centers). I'm talking about the places that supply tools to machine shops. Ask them about thread files. I don't know the thread count on the ball joint portion of the hub, but if you can count the threads per inch on the "good" hub (that isn't buggered) you can tell the supplier what you need. A thread file (as its name implies) is a file whose tooth pattern is spaced to match standard thread pitches. They are your best bet for cleaning up large damaged male threads.

Threads that large are generally cut on a lathe rather than by a die, call around local engineering shops and ask if you can get it turned by them. Or file it as has been said. Altough I have to say that that's not a thread I'd be re-cutting. It's safety critical and I'd be getting a new hub, nomatter how much paint I'd applied.

I agree with Dan, seeing as this is one ot the threads that holds the whole front suspension together, I wouldn't recommend filing or getting it re-cut. It will never be as strong as it originally was and you dont want it stripping and coming apart on you on the road.

I'd get another hub, either from a jumble, a brakers, or see if anyone here has one. I think MiniSport are having a clearance on new ones at the mo.

Tony
