Don't fill it with grease, oil as pointed out is quite sufficient. The "grease" trick was for Rover V8s and you didn't use grease. it was "Vaseline" or petroleum jelly which dissolves easily out the pump without blocking the oil ways. It's why you shouldn't use the stuff as a sexual lubricant with condoms, as the mineral base destroys the rubber.

Is it ok for the oil to pour out when attaching it to the engine?

I was thinking the same as I mount the pump vertically won't the oil pour back into block?

The 998's (pre A+) have a priming plug on the block.

I've read somewhere that on the other engines you prime it via the oil filter pipe.

You remove the large banjo bolt on the block and fill the pump slowly while turning the engine backwards ...

Is that true?

works when you forget to prime while building or it's lain too long. just turn the engine back a turn after priming.

Best thing is to use engine assembly lube.

If you wish you can 'back prime' as well after final assembly through the oil pipe hole on the front of the block.

When u describe the hole on the block do you mean where the external pipe that that is connected to oil filter is attached ? top left corner of block ?

Just use assembly oil, when you start the engine, take off the king lead and crank till the oil pressure registers, and then start.

Yes. I need to find out where I read that.

My engine will be stored for a while as I rebuild the rest so I have a chance to refill the pump before it goes back. I'm using lubriplate and assembly oil I bought from minispares.

Fill the oil pump with oil and it will drain out, but it will hopefully of worked it's way around the internals of the pump, but if you have engine assembly grease (lithium) this is better, you can also strip the pump and cover the internals that way, then back fill using the oil pipe from the filter, also fill your oil filter fully, let it soak in and then fill it again.... then fit it carefully. so as not to empty it.

Turn your engine over with the spark plugs out to get oil pressure (do NOT forget to disable the ignition as any spark could ignite the fuel from the spark plug holes)

Why are you using condoms in your engine ?  and what on earth would engine oil be in a condom for ????
