Hi all I'm toying with the idea of a removable steering wheel for security reasons etc.
Are there any kits that come recommended and then what wheels would go with them. Also it would have to be legal for road use etc.

Thanks in advance

Jon

Yes it is ok. You will need one that fits your boss and wheel. That is to say the bolt pattern that joins then together. So ar more common so cost less.

So what wheel and boss do you have?

So new wheel, boss and qr. Expect to spend a few 100 pounds could be up to 4-500 depending on the wheel you get.

In my opinion don't skimp on the QR boss. Cheap ones develop "play" over time which is obviously a safety issue, i.e don't get a cheap unbranded one from the likes of eBay

I would (and have) fit a Lifeline one, you can buy adaptor plates to fit Mota-lita wheels to them as well if you wanted a classic look. I believe that they can be bolt on or weld on.

Also account for the extra length that you will be putting into the steering column.

I have the Brown & Geeson one with a Momo wheel. There's no play and it feels quality. Avoid the cheap ones on eBay as others have said.

Another vote for brown and geeson (B&G) you can also buy direct from them and save a few quid.

You will also need the correct boss.

And then the QR needs to have the correct bolt pattern.

Think like this. You need the boys and steering wheel to fit together and to the car. Then you need the QR to go between.

It would be nice to be able to keep a standard wheel (like the OPs 35) I'd fit one to the Mayfair if I could.

It's hard to say how it would affect your insurance, you'll just have to call them. It might not affect it at all.

I've yet to see a kit which retains the standard wheel unfortunately.
