Finally bit the bullet and bought a high torque starter from MED.
I think my old starter is struggling to turn the engine over. Even run the summer the first start of the day, my heart is in my thought as it struggles to start the car.
Currently the car is stuck like this in my garden:
Just won't start even with a fresh battery.

Yes. Second this advice.Cut a slot in the and of the ‘captive’ bolt so you can wind it 95% of the way into the casing with a screwdriver. Otherwise it’s a long slow job with a spanner when you can only turn it one flat at a time.

Thanks for that!
Probably saved my sanity

Was really tired of how dull and uninspiring my garage was, But I dint want to send tons on vintage signs etc.
So set myself a challenge to make it a nicer place to be on a budget. I have collected stuff from flee markets for a while, I also repurposed some lamps and a tacky wall clock into what I think are pretty nice lamps (Castrol, AA and Monte Carlo)
Before:
After:
The lack of any mini driving must be getting to me! Made these for that garage too (no room for them really)
Edit: I only painted the BMC sign.

So I have now fitted the new starter.
The lower bolt was tricky, but not too bad.
It is a bit weird that the terminal stud points straight towards the grill, it clears, but not by much

I have take the opportunity of some extra days off work to look at how I could add a better methods for air filtration,
I want to fit an ITG "sausage" filter with back plate, but the current positioning of the throttle cable and bracket make that impossible. So armed with some advice from the twin came mini face book page, I modified the throttle quadrant assembly.
First step was to mock up a back plate to see which size filter I would need.
The unmodified quadrant
Then I split the three layers of the quadrant up
The plan is that i will flip 2 of the pieces 180 degrees so I can run the cable form below. That meant I needed to make a filler piece
It is all back together and seems to work well. I just need to make a neater bracket.

So managed to get the the throttle bodies back together.
I bought the newly designed specialist components rams pipes, they stet that these are just for K1200 heads. I thought this was because of the way the cable ran. turns out the K1200 TBs are a couple of mm larger. But this is how I made it work.
First I drilled and tapped 2 additional holes on each ram pipe. I did this so I could better positioned centre them on the TB.
Then I had to address the issue of there being a sharp step due to the smaller TBs compared to the ram pipes.
I spent some time with a dremel and made a gradient opening.
Then it was time to measure and drill the back plate. I actually bought 2 filters a 45mm and a 60mm. the 45mm is extremely slim and is almost double the price of the 60mm. So I decided to use the 60mm, not because I am tight, but I figured it would have better airflow. But this meant I had to offset the positioning of the filter.
I also had a huge airlock from the old BMW breather pipe. so i replaced it with some standard vacuum hose. Almost all the original BMW rubber connectors were also perished so i replaced them and fitted new O rings too.
Managed to integrate the air temp sensor

Very neat, looks better than my arrangement of rubber grommets and o rings! I went simple for the routing of the throttle cable, not sure if it will be a success or not, it certainly functions but it could wear out the cable prematurely, time will tell - if I ever get this thing on the road of course
I've since cut away the front panel for the filter to fit, it is a little tight and an adjustable engine steady certainly helps.
My 90degree bracket to re-position the original throttle cable mount, I may shorten this to bring it further up.....
I also replaced the rubber parts with new, I couldn't find a new breather pipe though and the two I had were both perished, I've simply blocked off the breather entries on the TB's with silicone blanks, but is this a problem and should they actually all be connected up as yours are is the question on my mind now!
