So the thermostat hasn't opened?

Unless there's an airlock

Yip it opened and  the coolant level dropped and I was able to put another 1/2 litre in.

It was just after that i noticed the temp gauge.

I actually start to think the gauge isn't accurate.

3 things came to mind. Air lock, water pump or faulty sender

cool, want sure what you knew about sensors,

just a thought but if you can find the resistance curve for the sensor online you can pop the plug off and measure it to see what it says.

also I just had a thought, you are talking about the guage o the dash, what does the ECU say?

You are right. Taking advice from other members here and on the 16v forum, I have downloaded the ECU software and I can see what the ECU thinks the temperature is.

If it is an airlock it is in the hose from the water pump top the bottom of the radiator, so is really tough to get to to massage the air out.

I think tonight, I will run water through the top hose (after the thermostat) with the aim to move any airlocks.

In the mean time, the bonnet arrived from arc angels, doesnt fit great but better than i thought. Seems a bit narrow. This is how it looks just resting in place without being bolted to the hinges or the front fasteners.

if it turns out to be that, it might be worth lookign at adding a bleed point there, you could use a femal fitting and bung as below.

Well panic over. I guess it is a wiring or computability issue between the sensor and the gauge. Looking at the car again tonight (less stressed) the temp gauge actually reaches the red just with the ignition on. Any ideas why? Using the ECU software I could see that the coolant temp was as you would expect for an engine being run in stationary. reaching just below 90 degrees.

So I am sitting here with a beer feeling quite chuffed. I really consider myself very much a novice home mechanic (i guess you can tell). I found this build challenging at times and I would totally have been lost if it weren't for the comments and support by members here and on the 16V forum.

Really humbling to think that people take the time to really help each other out in the community. I thank everyone who has assisted: Northernpower, mini 13 and  Hubba Hubba amongst others.   Special thanks to a coupe of members Namely NickLouse and Andy R (who has happily replied to 3 pages of messages and taken time to send me his unused bonnet FOC)

Video of it running post stationary run in - (note it sounds like it is knocking, this is purely on the video and doesn't sound like that in reality)

Sounds like your gauge isn't wired in correctly. Should have 3 wires, positive, negative(earth) and sensor. Sounds like you might have 2 mixed up somewhere. Might be earth and sensor.

It is basically a plug and play loom, the terminal was already there. Looking at the wiring there art 3 wires from the sensor  1 from one pin and the other two from the second pin.
