And if by magic... off Carbon Weezel...

(I have one of his carbon bonnets, and would very, very highly recommend)

I had slight clearance issues with my supercharger set up. Grp bonnet does the trick as it has a bit of give in it.

Evan a silverbullet edition. As cool as the exposed carbon looks, I prefer a body colored bonnet. Would be a shame to paint over one of these.

I played around with the angle of the hinge lift brackets and also brought the engine forward (so noiw the exhaust doesn't touch the bulkhead (10mm clearance)

With the bonnet on its maximum lift and with a slight lift on the front ( guess i can use some bonnet pins) it clears the cam pulley by 10mm. So there is a little room to play with.

The rear is higher than I wanted but needs must and I am not totally happy with the front lip not aligning with the rest of the grill.

Maybe it looks silly?

I can get a fiberglass bonnet with hinges form arc angels to me in Sweden for 150, So I may still go for that.

I put my fibre glass bonnet on with dzus at the front and just normal bonnet pins at the back. Found this helped to clamp/curve it to shape and looks quite normal, otherwise it would be sticking up about 15mm at the back.

I could force the front down to fit, but it will still hit the cam belt/pulley.

I like teh idea with the duz fasteners at the front. that i might steal.

Engine steady in! So 'final' position leaves about 10mm of clearance for the manifold.

Also bled the clutch. It is much heavier than the old standard Spi clutch.

I am using the MED Verto Ultra-Light ST1 Clutch Kit with lightened flywheel

spec :

  • M E D ultra light steel flywheel

  • Turbo solid clutch plate

  • Heavy duty clutch cover

  • New clutch centre

  • 6 x cover bolts

  • Dynamic balance

  • Only available with pre-eng ring gear

I guess this explains why it is heavier?

Also could not resist fitting the socks.

I am positive no other solution would have worked.

Also looking at my bonnet again, it aint great and really has no strength left. the bracing is just flopping around, i guess i could maybe bond this. As you see in the pictures the paint has rubbed where the leather straps were, seems like a perfect time to get a new bonnet.

Looking at the 16v bonnet from both arc angels and ABS, price is almost the same. What experience to people have. Was it arc angels who had a long lead time (maybe another supplier)?

Last question is a carbon bonnet so much stiffer than  fibre glass, keeping in mind i will use the old hinges.

Actually the ABS and arc angels bonnets appear to be slightly different

ABS: note extra bulge at the front and centre 'crease' a bit short

Arc Angels:

I prefer the look of the arc angels. hard to tell which has the most clearence.

I take it that you will need a cut out on the front of the bonnet to clear the air filters?

They are sock filters to basically just foam, that was just a trial fit, they can push in even further.

I have taken the last few days of work to get things done on this.

Spent a while mounting the servo, master and the all the brackets. I was struggling to find 2 nuts to bolt the servo to the master, turns out they are m8.

Decided to reuse the ECU bracket, i trimmed the unused tabs and rounded of the corners. Even though the SC ECU is half the size, it was tough to find a mounting space without using the bracket.

Also modified an exhaust reducer to also be a joiner. the SC is 2" and I will keep my 1.75" system.

excellent thread minisilverbullet.

I enjoyed reading it through, i myself have just purchased a complete engine with 8v k100 head. I have bought one second hand that has done around 10k miles, so i wont have to do all the building etc that you have, but your thread has still been very informative. I am now concerned about bonnet clearance though, i also prefer the arc angels style one, it seems to look more like a standard bonnet. I may even treat myself to a carbon one. we shall see.

one quick question, the foam filters over your trumpets, what sized ones did you buy? I read somewhere that k&n offer a filter that fits these, but i cant see how the cone filter would fit behind and in the engine bay, like you say the foam ones could be trimmed down to fit in. I think i will be opting for the foams too, just have no idea on size.

thanks, for such an in depth thread though.
