There used to be some aero tunnel footage on a website a while back bug that has been taken down as they are working on new aero items.
But what info are you looking for or what are you trying to achieve?

Basically I'm looking for the best place to mount a wing, just wanted to see how the air flows around the back to see what would be best

So why are you looking st a wing? Can't be for race use as they don't work.

If you want to reduce rear lift there are other ways.

But basically the rear of every short wheelbase car with a round rear creates lift.

From further back in the archives.....

Dave Vizards 'Mini Tech News' magazine March 1982 (available long before all the current Mini magazines appeared in 1990's)

(also note me listed as 'Roving Reporter' )

I have yet to find the more in-depth technical report on Mini aerodynamics that I have stored away somewhere in the loft.........

Awesome article, thanks Roving Reporter, mab01uk ;D

Just as predicted, about as aerodynamic as a brick. Loads of Eddie currents. Does appear the rear end would massively benefit from an under tray! Would hopefully stop grime and dirt getting in there too.

Has anyone actually tried blanking off the rear valence and subframe well as shown above?

If so, was the improvement (if any) worthwhile?

It used to be common for Special Saloon racing Minis in the 1970's to remove the boot floor to save weight and allow a small fuel tank to be fitted down low in the rear subframe, while also enclosing the whole of the underside of the rear subframe in a thin aluminium sheet undertray curving gently up to the rear bumper level (bumper and rear valance removed) to create a smooth underside. It certainly looked the part but I doubt anyone was able to actually measure the improvement gained if any.

Aerodynamic Engine Under Tray Kits and Rear Diffussers are available for the modern MINI......

"This is the fibre composite MINI GP2 Engine Undertray kit. This aerodynamic underfloor panelling gives much increased downforce with reduced air turbulence under the vehicle giving your MINI better stability at higher speeds. Works perfectly with the GP2 rear diffuser and GP2 rear spoiler to give a huge increase in vehicle aero dynamics, downforce and stability."

On my rally Minis there is always a battery-box shield made from 4 mm aluminium sheet, which is the full width of the tray plus about 2", so that it goes almost to the centre-exit silencer box and a fuel pump shield on the other side.

With the long sump guard, I guess I sort-of have the aero additions as mentioned.

Can't say I have noticed much difference in performance, but with a rally car, trying to improve the Aero-D is a bit like trying to polish a turd.

As someone commented earlier the Mini has the areodynamics of a brick.. they used to de seam to gain some top speed and I think it removed something like 40 inches of frontal area so prob did have some benefit at the top end,,, similar reasons for the roof chops that were popular back then

Looks easy, but in practice the rear silencer gets in the way big time.
