I am planning to install a single DIN mechless radio in my car, and I'm looking for installation examples.  My car is a central binnacle configuration.

Thanks.

Have you had a wander through the dashboard thread Corey? http://www.theminifo...oard-directory/  Someone here on TMF had a mechless set up above your head in the headlining but I can't find that thread.

Edit. Found it: http://www.theminifo...o/?hl=+mechless

Thanks mate.  Not quite what I'm looking for.  My car is being restored to factory stock, and will be entered in a fair number of classic car shows.  I'm leaning toward a subtle underdash mounting.

Corey, to each his own on radios.  Though I have one installed in my Mini, a friend accurately described it as a "stoplight radio" because the only time you can really hear it is when stopped at a traffic light (even with sound deadening materials on several panels).  Maybe your car will be quieter.

For what it's worth, my radio is tucked under the lower dash rail, back against the wheel arch and over towards the door as far as it would go.  It's a somewhat unfinished looking installation that I never bothered to dress up.  I keep thinking I will take it out altogether.

Thanks Doug.  As you can see, I will have complete sound deadening coverage.  As also shown in the image, I've installed a later model binnacle hole cover.  I'm also installing all new body seals throughout the car.  My car should be as quiet as a classic mini can be made.

I'll probably install my radio in the same location as yours.  This radio is very small, and includes a remote control, so access is not terribly important.  I plan to use it for MP3 playback.  These mechless units are very interesting.   Take a look at the first review in the link below and note the small size, and how little they contain.  Thirty USD for the unit - remarkable!

I have previously installed the head unit and speakers in a removable unit under the rear seat - all it needed was a plug and socket to provide power and it could easily be removed for looking stock when wanted.

I've also seen similar done in the rear bins and also under the front seats.

Thanks Graeme.  I had the same thought.
