Hey guys,

I was hoping not to replace the full scuttle panel on my mk1, and to just get away with doing the ends. However the repair panels for the ends are pretty poor and need so much fettling that I think I might buy a full scuttle panel.

Does anyone make scuttle panels for the mk1? The heritage one on Minispares seems to have two sets of holes for the wipers, whereas my car only has one set of holes. Are the panels otherwise the same? Can I just buy the panel, blank off the extra holes and use it?

Just blank the holes.

The panels are identical bar the extra pair of holes so just black off the 2nd pair and you're good to go. 

 

Cut a plug

 

Weld it in

 

Linish it down

Also, if you do opt for the heritage Panel, you will also need to tweek the washer jet holes too as the later panel uses "d" shaped holes

I probably will go for the heritage panel, as I'm in Birmingham so I can pick one up from Minispares. I like buying panels in person as I've rejected a few in the past... Easier to do the job if you start with panels that are the right shape!

Do the D-shaped holes make a difference? Do you see them at all once the jets are fitted?

Oh and Tupers, I've just had a look brought some of your other pics on Photobucket... I thought my project was a big job! Lovely work. Did you refit the scuttle before doing the wings, or just clamp it in place and weld it in at the same time?

If you don't reshape the washer jet holes the standard nozzle doesn't fit. It isn't anything major - more annoying than anything if you have to adjust it after paint.

 

Or you could just use the later washer jets

I also collect panels from mini spares in oldbury but I have used m machine on numerous occasions and have yet to have a problem, items always arrive well packaged and there own panels are a very good fit, they only supply the heritage scuttle so no difference to mini spares with this one though.
I need to get better at my grinding though as that scuttle patch is superb, welding I have no issues just can't grind flush as good as that.

Tupers, what are you using to linish down the welds? how do you get such a smooth even surface?

I've finally got round to fitting this scuttle... I've blanked off the extra holes as per Tupers post. 

 

The washer jet holes are in a different place on the original panel compared to the new scuttle... does that sound right? I dont want to fill and redrill the holes if the original panel was somehow wrong!

Yes that is correct as I had to weld up mine and redrill in a different place,
