something that has always had me wondering.

but what is the actual difference between, say, a stone cutting disc and a steel cutting disc?

they look just the same but?

I am guessing not that much.

Is that like rock, paper, scissors but for grinders?!

I would assume there will be different substances in the abrasives, even though the structure is largely the same.  Discs for stainless usually look a bit different.

In my experience the metal cutting/grinding ones always seem to slice through flesh more easily than the masonry ones do!

(Note to self: must stop testing cutting discs with fingers!)

The construction materials are different.
Silicon carbide generally for masonry, aluminium oxide for metal but can have more exotic materials added e.g. Zirconia.

There is a different performance versus price in some generic categories too, eg for metal cutting you might want cheap and have a high powered cutter whereas another might want long life precision with lower heat generation.

Just don't buy the cheapest non branded as if they go...they go!

You are possibly loading the disc ? I haven't had a decent brand ever fail, but I don't lean on the grinder or try and make it flex (not that I'm implying you do)

Metal cutting disks do cut concrete paving slabs, eventually...  luckily it was just the one paving slab that needed cutting, plus you only need to cut half way before breaking with a hammer/rubber mallet.

make sure they are in date!!!!! and the difference is the material and structure and quality 1mm discs are fine, might get the ode one fail due to a snag but to be honest i use 100's of discs and would not use any thicker than 1mm for cutting

I've had the same experience with a 3mm stone cutting disc ...top of my thumb almost chopped off ...so your are not alone ;-)

Re the failures I was referring to was not in use but in general abuse of putting down and storing a grinder or 3.

Was not aware of there being a life on discs.best before as to say.

Cheers anyway.

I usually buy a good branded disc for example  Sait  or   3m   but recently tried a couple of the Chinese ones from my supplier and they lasted very well considering that they are 50% cheaper,  I usually buy them by the 100 so I've  got a good amount in stock ready for when I finally start my Mk 1 !

beware of any cheap 1mm cutting discs with a 'lip' around the inner edge (i.e. they aren't flat).

they are the only ones I have ever broken (repeatedly).
