I need a new driver's door. My mini is a 1984 one, not sure what mark though.
Will it make any difference whether the replacement door is a Mk 1,2,3 or 4?
Are the doors all the same?
Also, what exacatly is a re-skin service?

Early external hinged ones are different, but in all honesty, doors seem to vary from car to car.

What exactly does re-skinned mean?

Early models have a rounded door edge, where later have a corner. Bottom right of the door on the lh side, bottom left on the rh.

Hi , re skinning the door requires taking the outer skin off so you are left with this

Later cars had side impact bars too so there is another difference.

 

Although these doors would fit Mk3 onwards.

 

If you have your door re-skinned, this is a better option than a second hand door as although it may appear solid, you can bet your bottom dollar that there will be rust in the seams between the skin and frame.

A brand new door is also very expensive so re-skinning is more cost effective.

Mk1 MK2 external hinged, MK3 onwards internal hinge and will fit any internal hinged car.

 

The later MPI doors had an internal crash bar fitted.

However, someone mentioned that not all mini doors are the same, so I am hoping it will fit my 1984 mini.

A MK3 door will be an internal hinged door and will fit your car.

That should in theory fit your Mk4, however may need tweaking to get a good fit and gaps right.

They could have also meant that a door from another Mini even if the same type may not fit well.

Every Mini is slightly different so your original door might fit well and have nice even gaps all round, but you might find that the replacement doesn't...

In this case, shims are your friend, that and perhaps a bit of muscle to twist the door slightly to make the fit even

A lot also depends on the skin used so either Heritage or Magnum. As Ben has mentioned unless its the car original door then there will always be a slight mismatch. Shimming and various tweaking will get you the majority of the way. Sometimes you will need to get heavy handed as well. Pieces of wood etc.

 

The gapping however can be very hit or miss. It really depends on what your expectations are.
