Hi guys, I've got a 1994 rover still with the original 1.3 A series engine in it. My question is can I convert it to all wheel drive without swapping the engine? Thanks in advance.

It would need a completely different gearbox output which would need to be designed from scratch, plus body mods and a revised rear sub-frame with a rear axle, again specially designed.

For the price of doing it you would be able to buy several Subaru's!

If you want a 4WD classic Mini you could fit a second engine in the back, as has been done in the past (check out BuFi Mowog).

Edited to add:

See above for the amount of work needed.

I'll just add to this that the Gearbox end of it is the easier and simpler part of it, doing something with the rear end is a huge pile of work, that is if you'd still like it to handle and feel like a Mini, which IMO, means retaining Trailing Arm suspension.

These are some photos of the Aust factory's Prototype 4WD Moke;-

This is not a full time 4WD and the way it is designed, it wouldn't take being driven in 4WD all the time, it will break the front diff in short time. It has a Dog Clutch set up, but that could be removed and a viscus clutch fitted.

I think I would rather have a Subaru WRX ;D . Bet my Land-Rover Discovery 300TDi would go as well as that over rough ground and that only cost me £750.

A bit cheaper to buy though ;D . Mine I got for £750 with only 100k on the clock (genuine according to the paperwork). It had no Mot, but it passed after I put water in the washer bottle. Little work was needed. Only a front hub seal (45 mins work), and a set of wiper blades were on the advisories, plus one front brake pipe which was not a failure, but I changed 3 brake pipes anyway. It tows my various trailers well and is a great 'truck'.

I bought a scooby off Dale on here for £400 all in, amazing thing to drive. Don't think the guts of it would fit under a mini though!

The Scooby WRX is certainly an outstanding car and a true future classic. Good value at the moment too.

Bhahaha,,,, not even with 2WD selected!  It just suck the life right out of it. They do need free wheeling hubs, but with some careful assembly the 53 - 55 BHP the 'stock' 1275 can put out much more and actually make them fun.

Cooperman, yeah, got me on the price, the Mokes we have are more than 10 times what you paid for your Disco!  BUT, it's still not a Moke ;D

A guy over this way did graft the running gear out of a Subbie under a Moke, it was nicely done, I believe it drove OK, but IMO, it's a Subaru with a Moke Body on top, it certain doesn't drive, feel or sound like a Moke and next to useless for going away in as there was nowhere left to put any gear or carry any fuel.

Another few guys have also done similar with Suzi 4WD under Mokes, very nice (one even has rear wheel steering), but again, not a Moke.

Earlier this year, I did my first ever trip away that wasn't in a Moke (shhhhh) and I gotta say, it wasn't nearly the same, it almost felt like a Video Game - until it got bogged - man them (conventional) 4WDs are heavy! And when they get bogged, they really get BOGGED. Nice, quaint even, but I'll still to the tent on wheels.

https://en.m.wikiped...rg/wiki/ZAZ-969 this isnt much bigger than a moke, had 30 or 40 HP engine... If it wouldn't be broken 2/3rd of the time, would make excellent off roader...

I looked into fitting Fiat Panda 4x4 running gear under a van a while ago as they have very similar wheel bases.

It would make for an interesting utilitarian vehicle but I doubt you'd get anywhere fast.
