I must admit after trying my own and then buying one I cannot recommend it enough.
I must also say that Ljonez made it look easy.
However if you are adamant on building one.
To far back will be determined by how close the water pump is to the tower also by the gearbox to the steering rack.
I found to try and get it as central as possible. I also used the bulkhead edge against the rocker cover to measure if it was straight.
I also tried to get it as high as you can for ground clearance.

I'd say get it in there and work it out from there, I've seen one that tilted the motor forward to ease the water pump clearance issues too? It tends to lift the diff end up which will effect drive shaft alignment.
Basically everything effects everything else so choose your best result.

depends how good someone is at making a frame though really. I'm much more at ease with having ym own frame as I know it's done properly and to my liking granted buying a frame is easy and the only option for some but for others it's the satisfaction of having your own custom build frameTo be honest I don't think you can beat buying a frame.
