To be honest I don't think you can beat buying a frame.

I must admit after trying my own and then buying one I cannot recommend it enough.
I must also say that Ljonez made it look easy.

However if you are adamant on building one.

To far back will be determined by how close the water pump is to the tower also by the gearbox to the steering rack.
I found to try and get it as central as possible. I also used the bulkhead edge against the rocker cover to measure if it was straight.
I also tried to get it as high as you can for ground clearance.

Hope this helps

Having no wings will mean you can potentially move the engine further towards the drivers side which will make driveshaft longer and ease clearance issues but then the water pump pulley becomes a problem.
I'd say get it in there and work it out from there, I've seen one that tilted the motor forward to ease the water pump clearance issues too? It tends to lift the diff end up which will effect drive shaft alignment.
Basically everything effects everything else so choose your best result.

There are so many builds now that someone must have the perfect positioning for weight and alignment has any one got any measurements laying around somewhere?

depends how good someone is at making a frame though really. I'm much more at ease with having ym own frame as I know it's done properly and to my liking granted buying a frame is easy and the only option for some but for others it's the satisfaction of having your own custom build frame :-)

My advice is that of you confident with a mig, have a bit of common sense and patience and will take advice, tips and criticism as it comes then I see no reason why you can attempt to make one from your old mini frame. Just go around the forum and look at other people's Frames and what they have done and ask around etc etc. If your not any of the above then I would day buying the allspeed one may save you hassle. It will probably cost about £100 for you to alter your frame. That's roughly what it cost me anyway. Hope any of this helps

I will say making your own frame is a bit daunting at first but once you get started it's really not that bad :) plenty of helpful people on here if you do get stuck with anything
