1969 Mini 1000 - Temp Gauge Problem

Hi guys. Newbie with a silly problem. 

The temp gauge goes to 100% when I ground it, but when I heat the sender valve, the gauge starts to rise and then cuts out.

First discovered the problem actually starting the motor and letting it warm up: The gauge would start to rise and then cut out. Now I'm testing it outside the motor. I have even used direct wiring to the spare gauge. 

 

Two different gauges, two new sender valves: same result.

 

Could it be the voltage stabilizer?  (I don't have a spare one to test with).

 

(After a test, grounding the gauge doesn't work until the car has been sitting a few minutes. 

All this is without actually starting the car, just heating the sender valve outside the motor)

You did not mention what the fuel gauge is doing.  The fuel gauge and the electric temperature gauge are both powered by the voltage stabilizer.  If the fuel gauge is behaving "normally" when the temperature gauge is acting strange, then the problem is not likely to be with the voltage stabilizer.  If both the fuel and temperature gauges are behaving strangely at the same time, it very well may be a problem with the stabilizer.

 

Also check the voltage stabilizer terminals.  On the stabilizer's small circuit board you will find the terminals labeled "I" and "B".  Make sure the stabilizer case is clean and has a good connection to the speedometer housing as the stabilizer gets its earth connection via the mounting tab.  The "B" terminal should have one or two dark green wires on it, that is the "Battery" connection.  The "I" terminal should have light-green wires on it, one going to each gauge ("Instrument")
