We're the carbs rebuilt before fitting?

If you look in his other thread the carb was cleaned, painted and fitted with new gaskets...

It wasn't the one i had but one i got from eBay , already painted and new gaskets.

this is a full hs4 rebuild kit.... https://www.minispar...~Kits.aspx|Back to shop

Don't know what to do anymore.

Installed the old carb and filter, trying to put it back as how it was before . Started to leak petrol from the linkage between floating bowl and jet  :mmkay:

As the refurb carb is the same needle , put that one on and started to leak from the pipe next to fuel pump and overflow started to leak too.

So far have new pipe and in line filter , sorted the float bowl leak, new breather pipe, new vacuum advance pipe , correct oil in dashpot.

Car would fire up after a few attempts (with choke open all the way) but would cut out as soon i started closing the choke or accelerating.

Now when turn the key won't even start .

The two mechanics i used here in Worthing they took my money but didn't sort out the problems.

At least i fi could get it started and running , i could take it to a mechanic that i found in Littlehampton ( 15 miles away).

This is a long shot but is anyone out there willing to help me out Worthing West Sussex .

It's starting again , with the choke completely open .
Gave it two turns at the mixture adjustment, without the filter cuts out as soon I close the choke but with the filter stays on but stuttering ( down know how to call it ) . When I remove the filter dies .

The only thing I down know how to check is it getting the petrol needed . The clear in line filter has 1/3 of fuel and I see it coming through but not sure if is right or not .

Hi 007xico,

I am sure it is nothing major but, no disrespect i feel you could do with someone to give you a helping hand to start from the beginning. If i was anywhere near you i would gladly pop round and help you set it up with a view to getting it somewhere where they can rolling road it to fine tune it.

Come on folks, there must be someone on here who is nearby that can help our fellow mini owner out, A couple of days early i know but, the season of goodwill and all that. That,s what we are here for isn,t it ????????

Assuming HS4

Undo the 3 screws holding on the dash pot and extract it along with piston and needle

Remove the piston and needle from the dash pot and slide back into the carb body it should drop all the way down into the body and make a metallic click when it hits the bottom. This is very important, no click and the main jet is off center. It should be free to move up and down into the jet any tights spots also indicate off centered main jet tube. On left side of carb is a lift pin, push it up and you should see piston rise and then drop back into body with a click if all is lined up

If the main jet is fine wind the adjustment nut all the way up until the spring is compressed, then back it off 2.5 turns, fit piston needle and dashpot. Top up dashpot with a light oil and restart car

I'm assuming the dashpot is sealing and the float is not stuck open, its safer to test this off the car so I wont go into the details as fuel can get everywhere

Do not be concerned about wrong needle at this stage it should still start

Sounds like you have an air leak somewhere if it only runs with full choke .... Make sure where the carb fits to the manifold all faces are clean and gaskets are in good condition and nuts are tight

Cheers James

So i managed to fix the leak on the original carb, all fitted now as it was before.

Does run better but needs adjusting and I don't really know how to. I do know the theory by reading tutorials but in practise a bit more complicated .

When i close the choke, car dies , needs to be open slightly to run.

The thing left to check/change is the brake servo vacuum (in case there is a leak), the hose as a big cut in in but is blocked with tape.

Can anyone tell me what pipe to buy and parts needed?

I am giving up .

After all the the trouble na money spent with refurb carb, now with the original one (only cleaned it) fitted , still a nightmare.

First fitted and found out had a empty battery (3 months old) because i left ignition on.

Jumped start the battery and after 5 mins no petrol.

Put the petrol in and no battery again, charged it on the plug for a day and it started but very rough (as it has been with the cleaned or refurb carb)

After 5 mins dies but won't start again , has battery and petrol.

It turns over but won't start with the choke open.

This car is draining all my energy and December is a extremely busy month for me.

I do read online and could be a lot of different things , points, plugs, condenser, petrol getting to carb, etc.

What a way of spending my Birthday.

If you run it completely dry, sometimes the particles in the bottom of the fuel tank end up in the fuel filter or float valve. Either way the car won't run very well.

Yep my mini mayfair 1989 998cc it's still a No start but now have someone very skilled helping me.

I been buying parts and been getting wrong at times, like the carb that i got thinking it was proper rebuild, but was just painted and leeks.

I will be buying a ignition "pack", so i will be converting to electronic ignition and don't know which i should get.

On eBay there is a kit of A+ engine 59d but just to make sure, is it with ballast ignition?

Also i am after a proper rebuild hs4 carb from a company or individual that does it professionally.

Any links would be welcome.
