In that case I would say the new CV joint is not seated correctly.

I copped a feel of its balls tonight......and they are in fact sitting near the edge of the bell opening.
So the drive shaft has obviously come away slightly while I was disengaging the cv joint.

Drivers side is complete! Not getting a lot of free time but I managed to get a bit done yesterday.
My problem was in fact that I didn't have the cv joint on far enough! Managed to break on of those c clips but fortunately noticed before I secure the boot on.
