have a read through my build thread in my signature, may give you some pointers and pitfalls to avoid

Im half tempted to build up my old engine, I have a 12g940 lying about and would be able to stick a real cam in it, then swap the engines over at the weekend.

Ah right, I'll have to note all of this down, as far as clutches concern, will a standard 998 clutch be ok? Or would an ap racing clutch be better?

Don't use any sort of race clutch. A race clutch has a very strong spring and puts additional load onto the crankshaft thrust bearings. A standard 1275 'S' pre-Verto clutch with a pre-Verto flywheel, slightly lightened will do the job very well. After all, you are still not going to have the torque of even a standard Mk.1 Cooper 'S' which had 75 bhp, but loads of torque.

It really is not worth spending loads on modifying a 998 as it will still be slow by the standards of today and by the standards of, say, a Mk.1 Cooper 'S'. However, a decent 998 is still a lot of fun. I was thinking only today as I drove a Land-Rover Discovery diesel how slow it seemed, then I realised that its 0 - 60 time is about the same as a 998 Cooper of c.1964.

You will get loads of fun from it once it's all done.

Yeah, I just wanted a fun 998 before I go onto the big bore stuff, seeming as it's my first mini I wanted to do some stuff to it, Then eventually buy a 1275 engine and build up a proper beast

1275 engines are a daft price too now, don't see them go for less than £400 on ebay atm. I bought my 998 engine for £34 on ebay!

Bought a 1275 Block Inc head and box for 150 euro, then a freshly bored 1330 for 150 as well (was a ripoff, Came without maincaps) but very lucky on the first one :)

Phillip, A lot of people on your rebuild thread seem to slate the sw5... Is that just because in your spec it was too tame? Or is that just in general?

just depends what people want I think, people seem to love revving the nuts off 998s so think they need a lairy cam. Maybe as well some people speak alot on forums rather than having actual real world experience of what was actually been done, the sw5 is by no means a race race cam but would give far better all around driveability, trust me, the 276 is just too much for general road use

Yes I defo agree on that! Keyboard warriors! I was just looking on the minisport site at their st544 cam kit, power band is a little higher than the sw5, 2000-7500, And Yeah I have to agree, even on my stage 1 998, I do rev the nuts off it quite a lot, but in a 998 it's quite fun to rev the ******* off of it!

The  544 ( or 643) is probably worse than the 276. You ve seen it on some of my vids, it needs revs. Anything over 3.5K and it starts to pull well , but for a road car I wouldn't use it. As always, everything depends on use, budget and what is  realisticly needed..

Totla different story in a 1275 tho :)

Also consider the minispares evo1 and evo2 cams. The evo1 has bags of torque and is 266 ish. The evo 2 apparently SW5 ish. Both designed by Bill Richards I'm led to believe I've ran the evo1 and it was a great cam. Also consider AC Dodds range of cams. Either range will save you pennies over a Kent or Swiftune cam.

Interesting about those minispares cams, never heard of them before, they are a fraction of the price!!!! May be buying one of those to build up my old engine, very attractive price
