Well i decided that id give the spare engine a quick re-build whilst adding some nicer bits to it.

So today i had a spear hour, so i got stripping lol not like that for u dirty minded people haha.

The head was just sitting on top so i took that off then took all the axillary's off, i then removed the water pump and spent bout 30mins trying to get the cam pully bolt out out with a breaker bar, but that wouldnt budge, so ill have to get something else on it has anyone got any tips?

I then removed the flywheel cover and started to take that off, but one of the three bolts just popped the the metal puller bracket :D so i took that back and lucky they changed it for free. Also the oil filter housing is different to my one. ill upload some pic tomorrow to show you...

The plans for this are fit my phase 3 cam, fit a light weight flywhee, new clutch, duplex timing chain, new oil pump, new water pump, new big end bearing, and anything else i come accross that i fancy changing.

I don't think theres anyway of telling if he heads leaded or unleaded!

That thing on the oil filter housing - it looks like somebodys used the cars standard weather sheild bracket as a washer!

lol i duno to be hones, no the reason i sail about the oil filer housing is it is different to all the others i have seen, iv just got back form the garage, i still cant the flywheel off, but i managed to get the crank pully bolt out and it has got duplex timing chain. :D lets hope i find some more goodies when i strip it down further.

Oil filter looks like the very early canister tpe with replaceable element. Obviously this engines been butchered before as these would never have benn fitted to an A+ block as standard!
Timing cover is probably a small bore type (which had the breather on the tappet chest).

I agree with GraemeC on those points, plus - how to identify unleaded heads.

Cheers for that jammy ;)

I thing the timing cover might be one made specially for the duplex timing kit.... as its got nothin on the inside that has been ground out... but this might be how the 998 engine is.

Thanks for the advice on the oil filter bit.

I think that the bits have been mixed and matched for a 1275 gt lump as this is what the engine came out of.

Still cant get the flywheel off!!! GGGGRRRRRR

small update on the engine front, but loads of pics (i think i like pics to much lol)

well i started out by nitromorsing (sp) a few things.

I started up by using it on the clutch/flywheel aluminum casing. It started red, then it went yellow, then bare metal.

Posted Image

I then did this to the timing cover.
Before.
Posted Image
Posted Image

After.
Posted Image

Thats all i did with the nitromors for now, but im going to do the rest of the clutch/flywheel aluminum cover and the head at some point.

I then pryed the duplex timing chain off, the small cog was on bloody stiff lol.

Posted Image
Posted Image
Posted Image

I also finished of stripping down the head.

Posted Image
Posted Image

But when i came to the last bolt on the head, one of the thermostat bolts, it only went and snapped on me :dontgetit:

Posted Image

Pic of morespeed ph3 cam and swiftune followers.

Posted Image

Rocker cover that ill be using.

Posted Image

im planning on using the standard 1.3 rockers at the moment as that should work better with the cam...

Also i moved the mini into its new how

Posted Image

its one of the building at the top of out garden, so the mini is finally out of the elements. so iv got somewhere to do the engine change when iv finished building this engine, but im stuck now as i cant get the flywheel off

i reckon that gearbox and chain cover used to be on a 998 engine and the PO just swapped the short motor and head.
