Ok well iv done quite a bit this morning, As i have decided to go for a partial MK1 look i ordered some MK1 rear light conversion plates. These came through mid week so i have started to fit one of them :w00t: iv ground the weld back since i took the picture, so iv just got to give it a bit of a skim fill and then that will be sorted :w00t:. (can you tell i havent picked up the welder for about a month lol)

Posted Image

I also decided not to use my fiberglass bonnet thats got the vents in, so i ground the lip of my original bonnet, and i also removed all the little bits from the inside like the hinge mounting points, spring lock, etc...

Also as i have started to fit the MK1 rear lights i had to find a different way of mounting a reverse light and fog light, for the reverse light i wanted to got for the old school boot mounted light, i didnt want to spend big money on one so i adapted a spot light. To do this i ground out the mounting bracket, i was then left with four holes, so i got the welder out and filled them with weld so the whole back end was smooth, iv not got to grill a hole in the middle and ill put a bolt through here and mount it like this.

I also got a pair of door dropped off yesterday :D thanks Dam_Buster :D

can i suggest next time you do any welding, the key to a good weld is preperation.

where you have welded in your mk1 lioghts, you haven't done any prep work.. which is why the weld is so piled up, and prob to much wire feed..

just some advice :w00t:

Thanks for the tips :w00t:

I did prep the metal but you cant see it in the pic, i ground back all the paint, so that there was only fresh metal that i would be welding.... So im not really sure why the weld is sitting so high.

I just welded the passaner side conversion plate and the weld looks alot better than the drivers side was....

List of what i need to do before getting it painted:

Skim fill the rear conversion light plates.
Weld the boot floor to the hinge panel section.
Weld tabs to both the top of the inner wings and to the boot for bonnet pins.
Remove drivers side a-panel and re-fit a new panel there.
Cut rear valance off.
Fit smooth fiberglass rear valance, when i receive it.
Skim fill a few little bits.
Make some internal boot hinges.

Then its off to be sprayed :w00t:

Here are some pics of the MK1 conversion plates welded in, then the welds ground back. I havent filed them yet but that should be to much work as them seemed to fit pretty well. I hand painted them with some hammerite just to temporarily protect them.

I think i might have also sorted out a rear roll cage :P The guy is supposed to be phoning me tonight so fingers crossed that will go well.

Looking good, but don't use hammerite as a protector. Get a decent etch primer. :P

If i can be bothered ill go out and weld some tabs in place for the bonnet pins and boot pins.

Spend spend spend hey Tom! :shifty:

Looking good so far though. What type of rear cage did you get? Fixed diagonal?

I bought a 6 point one recently, but it's got the fixed cross bracing on the back, so it's impossible to fit without chopping out the rear bins. Not sure I want to chop the bins out yet so I may flog it on to someone.

:)

Iv just got a cheap cage i think :xxx: it hasnt got any diagonals or anything. And it doesnt have any stickers on it to tell me what it is lol. I brought i more for look, but ill put foam padding, etc... around it so to try and add a bit of protection that way.

Iv got someone with me working on the mini today so when they are cutting out pieces for me for things like the bonnet hinge tabs ill be welding them in :) also hopefully we will get alot of the fitting done today.

I took my windscreen out yet to check the little rust bubbles that had appeared around the rubber seal, luckily it was just surface rust so i sanded that back and give it a quick lick of paint just to protect it :D

I also welded two little patches in to the scuttle, where there is usually two rubber grommets. Im not sure what they are for or why they are there so i thought it wont matter :shifty:

My plans for today are

-chop the rear valance off
-fit all 6 tabs for the bonnet pins
-weld the boot floor to the hinge panel part (before i cut the rear seam off)
-do some filling.
-strip the rest of the interior

I dont know if i will get all that done today but i hope i do :D then the mini will have the welding nearly done :xxx:
