Hi all

I have been quoted about 4000 for a respray. All this includes as per an estimate is bodywork prep flat prime body and closing panels I.e the door close steps respray rover flame red, black roof, prime and spray arches. Flat and Polish. I haven't had any other quotes this just seems alot. Will also point out this is external body only no engine bay not inside. And I'm stripping the bit's from the car. Can anyone who has had resprays done tell me if I'm being ripped off. The guys who I have an estimate from are a very good classic car restoration garage and there work does look very good.

Your thoughts would be appreciated

Thanks

Ed

You get what you pay for with a paint job....and everything to be honest.

Have they seen the car in person?  If not they will be quoting high to cover any issues they may find.

Sounds  pricey.  I  paid  3K  last  year  for  a  full  metallic  respray  inside  and  out to  include  engine  bay.  I  did  pay  extra  for  a  media  blast  which  saved  on  this  cost. (£600). Included  was  fitment  of  2  A  panels  and  a  small  amount  of  other welding. was  promised  a  "ShowCar" finish  and  this  was  what  I  got.  Shop  around!

I have had a quote of over £6k for a full inside and out job on my clubby. I will be doing it myself now.

I pulled the plug on the bloke respraying my lads car at £3k and still had the inside and boot area to do.

So depending on how bad your car is to start with £4k maybe right. Also a lot depends on the reputation of the company going to do the car.

We have seen everything on here from sub £1k to £6k +

Just had ours done sub £1k.

It was about £170-200 ish for materials. Then about a million hours of my time to prepare and assist with flatting between coats and the lacquer coat.

I don't want to do that again for a long time, putting the paint on was the easy bit.

Oh that's not including replacing the front end scuttle panel outer sills and door steps. Plus a repair to the rear quarter panel. 4k is literally the labour for the paint job. Thinking I might not go there they do seem very good but it just sounds too much.

Now that is bloody expensive.

£4K for bodywork?? What you have said there should be more £1500. So I take it the front wings are in that price as well??

Yes sorry so panels to be replaced are front panel 2xwings 2xa panels 2xdoor steps 2xouter sills and a small repair to driver side quarter and a rear valance repair. They've quoted all this as until the strip back there not 100% sure what they'll find which I get. Then they have quoted for the respray all this for 9K. It's just the 4K for respray and that's only exterior.

Gonna have a shop around.

For that price you might aswell sell yours as a project car and buy a half decent one that's already been done, unless yours is super rare! There's still plenty of cheap welding garages about, might be cheaper to get someone to do the welding and another fellow to do the spraying, 4K is stupid money in my eyes! Yes you get what you pay for blah blah, but is your car worth 4K? Mine wouldn't be worth 4K even with a 4K spray job!

What brand of panels?? Magnum or Heritage?? It may pay you to buy the panels yourself.

Pay a fiver and become a TMF+ member and get 7.5% discount with minispares.

so Heritage

Front panel:- £184.62

Wings:- £100.22 ea

A panels:- £21.10 ea

Doorsteps:- £79.13 ea

Outer sill:- £39.56 ea

All of the above include VAT

I wont price a repair for the valance or quarter not knowing what is damaged.

Magnum panels

Front panel:- £64.80

Wings:- £45 ea

A panels:- £14.26 ea

Doorstep:- £12.42ea

Outer sills:- £17.82 ea.

So panel wise its your choice but deduct 7.5% and quite a bit to save.

PandO - Can I be cheeky and ask where you had your paint done as I'll be getting my GT done next year.

For me, the car would need to be very special to me or very rare indeed to make it worth spending 9k to get that done. As said already, you may be far better off selling, and putting the money towards getting a really sorted one. You should be able to get a very good mini for less than that.

Might I suggest if you do go down that route, to try and find a Jap re-import, as you would be able to get an essentially rust free mini which has not been welded, for around 4k upwards depending on the condition of the mechanicals. Perfectly possible to pick up an on the road, tidy Jap mini for around the 4k mark (if you can find one of course).

Alternatively you should be able to find a very well restored example for well within the budget you are talking about for the repair / respray work. Think carefully before deciding to go ahead. There is always going to be the risk when getting someone to do this type of work, that you will not be happy with the results. At 9k you will be expecting perfection (quite rightly!). If you buy something then you can see what you are getting before parting with any cash, so there is also that benefit to selling what you have and buying the car you ultimately want to have instead.

All comes down to you particular circumstances of course, and the value of your current car to you. Good luck with whatever you choose to do.

I find a lot of bodyshops have a license to print money. Often quoting stupidly high prices as they don't want to do the work. I've found that if you do a lot of the work yourself, or get bits done by other peeps, then you can save yourself a fair bit. I've had a bodyshop say they will charge me £2k for a full respray of my cooper S when complete as long as its primed. They'd flat it, give it the once over and spray inside and out. I've asked for it in writing too :D
