I believe they were spot welded there on the scuttle flange.

It's much worse in the drivers side. The white is the wax I've used to protect it

I was told years ago never to fill in that join as whatever you put in it, it will crack.

Yeah it was a bodge job in my opinion. The guy restored the Mini on a budget in the hope that he will make a profit but ended up making a loss when I bought it. It was something like £675 to fit the wings and spray the car. What did he expect?

I'm just planning on tidying it up and mainly protecting it until I decide to have it done professionally in the future.

Dig that lot out and use caravan sealer(it stays flexible)

But then you still will have problems with cracks in the paint?

A lot depends on whether as i have already mentioned IF the small bridging plate has been fitted to the wing and A panel and IF the wing has been welded to the scuttle underneath. If you are going to use sealant then it needs to be forced right down into the groove as far as possible.

If the wing is not attached at all on the those two places then anything in then will crack the paint due to flexing.

Mine are filled with seam sealer. But, as sonik mentions, benefit from welds underneath to keep things from flexing.

Isn't  it an option to keep the gap open without sealing?

No cracks and no rust underneath the sealer.

I believe this was done in some Mini's in the past.

My restore project will hopefully be ready for the paintjob this summer, but I still don't know what is the best thing to do.

Do you think fill the gap with sealer is better than keep it open?

From the factory there was no sealant, on my lads we have Aviation sealant in there forced right down into the gap and sealed from behind to prevent moisture ingress. our choice plus the sealant is a very good corrosion inhibitor as well.

I've seen Mini's with no sealant and I think they look very shabby.

A lot does depend on how well the panels are fitted. The gap should be quite small and consistent.

All my panels are genuine and new and the gaps are small.

Maybe i will leave the gap open, but I am not sure.
