Having just read about the reasons you shouldn't fit certain components to a road car, I'm interested to hear people's thoughts:

Of the common performance mods done to Minis, what should not be done on a road car, and more importantly, the reasons why?

Race pads. They dont work well from cold, and can give you a nasty surprise on your morning commute.

Modern race pads are fine. It's the old and famous Ferodo DS11 pads and the Mintex equivalent (M20?) which were so poor from cold. I can remember having to get them really hot before an MoT test and then get the tester to test the brakes first of all on my rally cars.

A Mintex 1144 pad is fine for all road use and the Carbon-Metallic pads now available are, quite simply, superb and work very well straight from cold. I've even used a Mintex 1177 on the road with no issues at all - that was in a Rover 214 Si rally car.

You know I really don't know how I found time to have a 'proper' job which, in my case was running an engineering design consultancy and high-end engineering recruitment operation.

I seem to be more busy than ever now, even though I'm 75 years young in December. Today I've been shifting bits of tree from my garden, working on my newly acquired L-R Discovery and sanding down my 1964 850 Mk.1 Mini doors which I've recently re-skinned.

I have been using carbon metallic pads on mine for the last few months after your advice on here and hearing good reviews, from cold they are as good as the EBC Black stuff pads I had before and when you get some heat into them they are excellent! On the road to work which is a nice twisty country lane the brakes get really positive after a couple of hard stops!
