Hi having put a new front end on my roundnose a while back now. There was a small plate that seemed spot welded to the slam panel, just right of centre. I chopped off this piece in case it was of any significance and maybe reattatching if it was needed. My car is a 89 mini thirty made then by rover, and has the rover vin plate rivetted on the drivers side inner wing. Any idea?

I'm pretty sure that is an identity number. (Same as a chassis number on a modern car!)

There ahould be a similar number on the scuttle gutter

Tack it back on

It should be the chassis number

the more Id you can preserve on the car , the better

it is also sometimes on the scuttle (as above) , but on a 89 , this has probably long gone

there is also an commission plate on the slam panel - sometimes - but the corrosion gets to the rivits

Numbers stamped in the floor might be customs references for imported cars... Our van resto had one, now cut out & kept, for when it was imported into Norway; the SPi was imported from Germany, so has one as well. Keep it, in case!

The number on the slam panel is nothing more than a factory reference body number, it has nothing to do with the stamped in chassis number in the scuttle, or the riveted chassis plate. Personally I'd keep it for originality and without it makes it more oblivious the front panel has been replaced. Although mine was removed when I replaced the front end and due to one end being slightly rotten, I've lost half of one of the numbers and it seams no one uses reverse stamps anymore to get a new one made up.

ps. there's also a few beers to anyone who can reverse stamp some numbers into a strip of steel...

I agree with tacking it back on for originality

on my 1989 mayfair , it is the chassis number , it is like a dyno label for .5 mm steel strip

on a 1989 there should also be a commission number

The above is is correct.

I'd put it back on as it shows some care and attention to detail has been taken when working on the car - all to often these are simply thrown away.
