Slight update on this and since it's recently turned colder it's started playing up again. And it was until earlier today while checking the oil, coolant, washer level etc., that I'd see about replacing the 20w50 in the dash pot to something thinner, like some 3in1, that unfortunately made not noticeable difference. So I swapped back to the 20w50 and cleaned and lightly polished the dash pot damper. Witch seams to have done the trick, it revs up from idle so cleanly now even when cold and on the choke. And all from just a blob of metal polish and bit of rag.
