I suspected when I bought a mini for a project that my first thread on TMF would be a cry for help. Long story short I'm trying to remove the flywheel from my 1275 with the cheap cr*ppy laser flywheel puller from halfords. Ye I regret buying it now and should of invested in a good one but was worth a go for a £20. I don't really want to spend £90 on a guessworks puller for me only to use it once and then sit in my toolbox for years to come.

So my question is, does any one local to the Wigan area have a flywheel puller I could borrow in exchange for some beer tokens please?

The other option is taking the engine to a mini specialist for them to remove the flywheel if nothing comes up.

Thanks

James

Halfords one is a bit basic but does work tighten it as tight as it will go spray it with gt85 leave overnight then give it a whack on the end with a hammer it should make a big bang and be off
It worked for me after getting very fustrated hopefully you can get yours sorted

I've got the Draper one and I've used it on loads on engines no trouble

Since this sounds like your first attempt, I'll say this...

Did you remove the keyed washer behind the bolt ? I still manage to forget this once in a while and takes a bit of head scratching to work out why it's not working   :whistling:

Providing the engine is out, then bite the bullet and get a Guessworks one. Probability is you will use it again anyway.

The Draper one works for me. The some times the fly wheel can be a real pita and on occasion the bolts supplied are not up to the job. As mentioned in other posts a good penetrating oil a good knocking stick. You can borrow mine but I am quite a way from you.

Thanks for all the replies. Ye I've removed the keyed washer and ensured the puller is on square to the flywheel. I've been tightening the puller bolt with an impact wrench and whacking the puller bolt still with no avail. The puller has been on there a week with it been tightened most night still with no avail. Sounds like persistency is the only way then. All the washer that were supplied with the kit have started to distort around the heads of the bolts which shows how much force the puller is exerting. I'm just hoping the C washer hasn't become stuck and seizing the flywheel to the crank. The slots have always been horizontal so hopefully not. I'll keep going and hopefully report back with success.

Thanks for the replies with all the help and suggestions  :proud:

Managed to use Guesswork's puller in the car just recently. With a bit of jiggling, it fit between clutch and inner wing (pushing the inner wing over by about 1/4"). Cranked it up, and job done.

Glad you managed it. It's tight though. I guess a piece of rag between it and the inner wing helps.
Of course you can't hit it with a hammer though with engine in car, which is where the Guessworks one comes into its own over the lighter duty Laser one sold by Halfords.

Two things....

1. I've just made up the "Hire Kit" flywheel puller, so instead of buying one you can rent it...

    http://www.guess-wor...play.htm?id=532

2. There is soon to be a new, additional, screw for the puller which will be a 40mm long hardened grub screw with a 1/2" square in the end which will allow the use of the puller in the car, and you just attach your breaker bar straight into the back of the screw.

I was hoping to have the latter ready for Mini Fair 2 on Sunday 18th, but sadly they will not be ready.

1. Hire great idea.

2. This makes your puller more versatile, genius. Can we just buy the new modified screw to upgrade your standard puller please? When it's available. Edit already have one of your Heavy Duty Pullers.

Good idea of having a hire option. I'm sure a lot more people will be attracted to this option if they're only planning to use it once.

I'll no doubt be in touch if I don't have any luck this week.
