Hi guys!

A few months ago I came by someone who claimed that he/she had modified her own head to a 7 port.

A bit similar to the minisport X flow design. But,as always, I can't find the pictures anymore. I think it was on the 'turbo mini's' forum, but I just can't fidn it anymore.

Does anyone know where I'm talking about / has the pics?

WOuld save me searching through my 6 month internet history :P

Edit: the post I came by was probably not new, so could be 5 years old too. I just saw it by googling that day :P

many thanks!

Diego

you can not modify a 5 port to a 7 port you will have to purchase a 7 port head..........

thats what I thought, tho, it looked like hé/she made up flanges, similar to the minisport X flow. Might have been unable to run due to no cooling orso :P

It can, and has, been done; but not a cross flow. I think it was originally by Manx Racing. Essentially putting a divider into the siamese inlets to create 4 separate tracts, and then a manifold to suit (possibly with twin webers)

I recall Gordon Allen did a few fancy heads for the A Series, I think he mad an 7 or 8 port from a 5 and even a cross flow OHC from a cut down Jag head. This was back in the 60's and maybe very early 70's.

still I can not see the point of putting a splitter in the intake to make 2 into 4 without further mods to existing intake........the cost must out way the price of a 7 port head

The 'idea' of the splitter is to try to get away from the issues of port robbing and when it comes to racing, there are some mods that are within the rules, like unlimited head modifications as long as it's the original factory casting that is at the base of it. I wouldn't both for an open class of racing nor for the street, there are better heads about to use, however IMP, the bigger issue is not the ports but the valves and the number of them.

7 and 8-port heads are excellent for competition when allowed, but for a road car they really are a lot of money for not a great result. In the end it's still a classic car with a 60+ year old design of engine.

With classic cars you do spend a small fortune, and don't I know it, but the spend is to achieve a classic car with true 'retro' driving characteristics rather than gain the last few bhp which can't really be used on the road.

Whilst I love Minis for historic competition, I am convinced that on the road the best configuration is an engine similar to the original 1275 'S' unit with maybe a slightly better cam, an improved head, a higher C.R. and a few other 'nice bits'  to give about 80 to 85 bhp with slightly improved torque. A FDR of around 3.44:1 gives good generally reasonable performance and the car will feel true 'retro'. I do know that my recently sold Innocenti 'Export', with a basically standard 1275 engine bored to 1330 cc (next size up from what it had) was so much nicer to drive on the normal roads than my 1964 Cooper 'S' rally 'screamer'.

Getting the suspension right makes the car feel even better and enables full enjoyment on twisty roads where a classic Mini is best at home.
