7 and 8-port heads are excellent for competition when allowed, but for a road car they really are a lot of money for not a great result. In the end it's still a classic car with a 60+ year old design of engine.
With classic cars you do spend a small fortune, and don't I know it, but the spend is to achieve a classic car with true 'retro' driving characteristics rather than gain the last few bhp which can't really be used on the road.
Whilst I love Minis for historic competition, I am convinced that on the road the best configuration is an engine similar to the original 1275 'S' unit with maybe a slightly better cam, an improved head, a higher C.R. and a few other 'nice bits' to give about 80 to 85 bhp with slightly improved torque. A FDR of around 3.44:1 gives good generally reasonable performance and the car will feel true 'retro'. I do know that my recently sold Innocenti 'Export', with a basically standard 1275 engine bored to 1330 cc (next size up from what it had) was so much nicer to drive on the normal roads than my 1964 Cooper 'S' rally 'screamer'.
Getting the suspension right makes the car feel even better and enables full enjoyment on twisty roads where a classic Mini is best at home.
