I have a 1981 mini HL

I have been having problems with engaging reverse gear. About 50% of the time when i go to engage reverse gear, it really grinds and clunks to get into gear. Ive been told it could be to do with the syncros.

Im not to mechanically savvy, so some help on what is causing this would be great!

thanks!

There is no syncromesh on reverse gear.

A dragging clutch could be the cause.

+1 for above.

If you use the search function on here, you'll find plenty of threads on clutch adjustment.

Mr Cooperman had a very good article on here with regard Mini clutches a while ago now

Clutch drag can be down to poor adjustment but usually it's a case of worn mechanical parts on the clutch arm (clevis pin or ball on the of the clutch arm inside the "wok"). Dodgy hydraulics such as master or slave cylinder seals or a collapsed hydraulic hose can also cause problems.

Cheers, Steve.

I had this issue, but just a slight grind on reverse, but mine was due to being stood for a while and not used. Seems fine now I have been using the car and a change of oil and filter. May not help your issue, unless its been stood a while tho.
