On This Day 1977: T-Rex singer killed in car smash

Pop star Marc Bolan was killed in a car crash in south-west London.

The 29-year-old former T-Rex singer was killed instantly when the car (a purple 1275GT Mini), being driven by his girlfriend, Gloria Jones, left the road and hit a tree in Barnes.

Lot 575 Description - "Marc Bolan, lead singer of T. Rex - Three tyres & wheel rims from the Mini 1275GT he was passenger in on the night he died (16th September 1977), all labelled "3121/7 Marc Bolan Do Not Destroy", with a letter from J.H. Martin to the Solicitors (Stevensons) discussing what they should do with the tyres (dated 1988) & a photograph of the Mini after the crash showing clearly the damage to one of the wheel rims."
