Hi, I've got the programmed ignition side working now.

Decided to use one of these VW coil packs with the built-in power amplifier (ignitor). Wow, these things really spark - I had it running on the bench and sparks were flying even at around 5 volts supply. You don't want to run one of these with the plugs leads off - the sparks easily jumps about 2 inches!

It needs a 0 to 5 volt logic signal to trigger it, with a dwell of about 4milliseconds. Low to high starts the charging and high to low triggers the spark.

This is it installed:

The old coil's gone but the dizzy is still there to drive the rev counter. Will remove it later once (if) the ECU proves reliable.

Here's a short vid that shows how stable the spark position is - never seen anything like this with any dizzy before. Have only driven about 10 miles with this set up so not sure about the net benefit. But starting (warm) is instantaneous now and cold starting is definitely improved.

I really like the idea of this. Even if it doesn't produce the same outright power as a finely tuned carb, the ease of changing mixtures and timing, and the easier cold starting are huge bonuses. I'd be interested in a kit, depending on the price and if I can find all the parts out here..

Have you got a list of all the parts that you'd need for a swap, e.g. crank & cam trigger wheels, sensors etc?

finch661, MiniMannanan, timmy850 - really sorry for slow response, I've not been on the forum much these last few months :shy: . Basically, I've not made any progress since the ast update as I've been busy on other projects. I had planned to have the ECU installed in a Golf GTi and tested on a dyno by now - but you know what they say about plans! I can't see me making any progress this year due to current workload but I'll report back as soon as I can.

no need to apologise, i think we are all just keen to see how the project is turning out. Are you still planning on selling these once they have been tried and tested?

Once i've had it tested on a few different engines, I'm probably going to publish the source code, parts lists and as much documentation as I have - basically enough info for someone to buy the parts and build their own. The only thing unique is the cicuit board and if there's a demand I can have more produced and that's about all I'd need to sell.
