Hi, I've got the programmed ignition side working now.
Decided to use one of these VW coil packs with the built-in power amplifier (ignitor). Wow, these things really spark - I had it running on the bench and sparks were flying even at around 5 volts supply.You don't want to run one of these with the plugs leads off - the sparks easily jumps about 2 inches!
It needs a 0 to 5 volt logic signal to trigger it, with a dwell of about 4milliseconds. Low to high starts the charging and high to low triggers the spark.

The old coil's gone but the dizzy is still there to drive the rev counter. Will remove it later once (if) the ECU proves reliable.
Here's a short vid that shows how stable the spark position is - never seen anything like this with any dizzy before. Have only driven about 10 miles with this set up so not sure about the net benefit. But starting (warm) is instantaneous now and cold starting is definitely improved.
