hi all

my minis mot runs out on the 6th of September. Umfortunatly it needs an engine swap and new front brakes before it has any chance of passing and I don't think I'm going to get time to do this before then. As I pay my car tax monthly will it get cancelled on the 7th when it is no longer motd? I am expecting to have it sorted mid to end of Sept so really I don't want to sorn it u less I have to and equally I don't want to pay a months tax twice if it is cancelled and I then have to retax it!

For the sake of 1 months tax it wouldn't be worth the hassle of cancelling it, just leave it Tax'd.

yes that's what I'm wanting to do but I've heard that mot and tax is more closely linked and tax is cancelled when an mot runs out? Or have i (hopefully) been told wrong. Dvla doesn't seem very clear unless I've just missed it!

Crikey you guys have what seems a complex registration system. We just pay 6 or 12 months in one payment.

If I remember correctly, it is at the time of renewal, so because your MOT is after your tax renewal date, then you will have tax still for the rest of Spetember, so yes you should be alright just leaving it as is as long as your mini is ready to go by October's Tax renewal, otherwise that's when it will cancel itself seeing no MOT.

Hope that makes sense

Ours was like that too, and still is, but they also brought out this direct debit way :P doesn't seem too bad having to pay it in installments. I used to hate paying it out in one lot, so good idea this way I think. Is a bit of a faff sometimes though like above

We still pay either 6 or 12 months tax, just you enter into a credit agreement if you pay monthly.

So to the OP's original question, the car will remain taxed until you either sorn the vehicle, sell the vehicle, or the agreed term of the tax purchased expires ( as it use to do when you had a piece of paper ), whether the car has MOT or not.

Regarding the MOT, it does matter if it has or hasn't now...

"the payments will continue automatically until you notify us to stop taking them providing you have a valid MOT in place at the point of renewal."

"Point of renewel" referring to as the monthly payments

I believe the requirement is just for insurance to be in place if the vehicle is taxed, I'm not aware of any link to the MOT other than for a valid MOT to be in place at the point of renewal. (which isn't a new requirement as it was also the case in the previous tax disc system) As far as I'm aware, the point of renewal is the date when you applied for the tax. If you pay by monthly direct debit the date of renewal still remains the annual date that you applied for the tax. Monthly direct debit is just a payment scheme to pay for a years tax in eleven installments, I don't think that it's a case of renewing the tax each month.

One of my minis is currently off the road and the MOT has expired, it's still both insured and taxed by monthly direct debit though, because the tax was in place before the MOT expired. The tax didn't automatically cancel when the MOT expired, the only way I'm aware of to cancel the tax is to either sell, or declare SORN.

Oh right, I'm just going by how they have said it under the Direct Debit terms. I've always believed it to be like what I said, but if one of your minis is still insured and taxed by monthly direct debit and the MOT expired since then can't argue with that :P

Its not a credit agreement, you pay in advance via direct debit, there is no credit being taken or offered ;-)
