Hi, I have recently bought a 1996 Mini Cooper 1.3i. But I have had problems starting it - at first it turns over but won't fire and after loads of attempts I leave it and then a short time later I can go back to it and it starts first time. I have taken it to 3 garages so far and finally one has diagnosed it as being the single point injector. They are unable to get parts but have shown me how to start it by pouring petrol into the carburettor. I have googled and am unable to find parts either. Does anyone have any ideas of the best places to get parts? Any help would be much appreciated as I have only driven it 3 times in the month I have had it!!!

Its easy to check. Firstly, to see if its actually working, just take off air filter top and whilst getting some on to try starting it, look in intake and you should see fuel pulsing out of it. If it isn't, before going any further, give the top of it a few LIGHT taps (Small spanner or tiny hammer) and try again. It it works go and buy some injector cleaner for in fuel tank.
If after tapping it You get no response then you need to test it electricly, this is done with test light between the 2 injector wires. It should flssh whilst trying to start it. If no flashing you have an efi problem, if it flashes and injector doesn't work then its a dud. The injector is just an electric solinoid, if it dies electricly it stays dead, it wont come back to life putting fuel down intake but thy are prone to sticking, either from foreign material in it or just worn out. Try that and see how you go.
