Hi,

My Mini is shockingly bad in the rain. So bad when it starts to rain I feel nervous going out in it. I believe it's the spark plugs getting wet. I have done the glove over the distributor trick, but unfortunately it's not enough.

What else have you tried or used? I've come across a sort of spark plug dryer and sealer in SparesWorld a few months back for around £3, is that any good? Also I don't have one of those covers (that go over the plugs) that are apparently standard.

Any tips appreciated :)

Thanks,

Corey.

The Mini is not basically bad in the wet. In fact think of all the rallies the cars have done in streaming wet weather, through deep fords and on flooded lanes.

The best way to seal it is to buy a tube or can of silicone grease. I use the grease they use to grease the control cables on light aircraft as it is totally non-conductive.

Liberally plaster it all over the dizzy cap, the coil connections and the plug leads. Then spray with aerosol ignition sealer and allow it to dry. It will then not fail in the wettest of weather.

I would Get or make one of the above covers, they can be bought cheaper than that or made for free like mine.

The plastic engine splash shield was a standard factory fit from sometime in the 1970's onwards to stop wet ignition leads and distributor........the fixing brackets are often still in place but the plastic covers get lost or not re-fitted over time.
