Non-Reflective Number Plates linked to rolling Tax Exemption.
"At every FBHVC meeting with the DVLA we learn something completely new! In this case it is that the end date for black and white (or silver and white) number plates is linked to the historic tax class date. So we were told that non-reflective plates are now permitted on vehicles built before 1 January 1975."

See FBHVC Newsletter - Issue 4 - Page 8 (PDF)

http://fbhvc.co.uk/m...letter-archive/

Previously the dvla has always stated that the date for the requirement of yellow / white reflective plates is 1st Jan 1973, but I believe their website has not yet been updated to reflect their new rules......

Note: The FBHVC newsletter above also has some information from the DVLA on the recent Historic Vehicle verification letters that were sent out to some owners.

So black and silver plates can be used up to 1975 now ? Or is it just yellow plates don't need to be reflective ?

Cheers james

Black with white or silver letters can be used.......basically it appears all 'historic class tax' vehicles can now use them, although some owners may wish to continue with later reflective plates if 'in period' for their post 1973 car.

It has been mentioned that the early style plates could be used to easily identify all classic vehicles visually if or when they ban classic vehicles from some cities or town centres due to emissions, as in some other European countries......but this seems unlikely?

To do that they'd have to make black plates compulsory, which goes against the legal principal that allowed you to keep black plates in the first place.

Considering NPRS was the reason for getting tetchy over plates, allowing different plates for vehicle identification seems a dubious argument.

I personally wouldn't take this as gospel until it's officially confirmed (fhvbc aren't official and it appears that it was pretty much just a chat with somebody from dvla)
There's nothing new about plates in the MOT manual which does still mean you're incapable of passing a test and therefore it'll be classed as unroadworthy and you'll be up for a fine if stopped.

Blog: Inside DVLA - What’s the story with black and silver number plates? Vehicles that can display black and silver plates

Since April 2015 vehicles manufactured before 1 January 1975 can display the older style plates. You must:

  • have applied to DVLA, and
  • be registered within the ‘historic vehicles’ tax class.

This allows your vehicle to retain its authenticity and be in keeping with its age.

Vehicles constructed 40 or more years ago are exempt from vehicle tax.

The 40 year exemption date rolls forward automatically each year on 1 April.
