My pickup came with a twist handle valve, that I thought was a proportioning valve. It turns out that turning this actually just turns all the brakes on or completely off depending on whether its screwed in or out!

I'd like to remove this valve (it's currently inside the car) and put one under the bonnet instead. Will I simply need to get a proper valve like this: http://www.minisport...adjustable.html or do I need something else to balance the front and rear brakes?

Note: I'm running drums on the rear and mini sport 4 pots with cooper master cylinder on the front.

Sounds like your current one needs a service or has been fitted incorrectly.

You say cooper MC? So single circuit? It fits in the line to the rear. Nice to have it in the car as it is easier to set correctly. And adjust if you are actually carrying a load in the rear.

When set they can be locked off with the nut on the shaft.

yes. I think it probably is fitted incorrectly and I'm having it looked at tomorrow. I've heard good things about the Wilwood valve, plus it looks nice, so will probably get everything setup neatly under the bonnet. It's especially tricky with the pickup as there's less weight at the back.

Richie, you may want to check with PO about reason for this on/off valve.

My guess is that with fitting the better front brakes, the rear brakes were either locking up under heavy braking or in the wet... there is not a lot of weight on the back wheels of a pick-up unless loaded.

On-off valve probably there for MOT days.

It locks up the rears as it stands, which is why the valve was adjusted (and the problem found). This happens in the dry :-(. Why would it be useful for MOT? Thanks.

If it's a shut-off valve then closing it fully should stop all pressure reaching the back brake cylinders, and should not lock up. The only thing which then operates the back brakes will be the handbrake.

With above and rear brake cylinders not working you will fail the MOT, so on MOT days just open up the valve...
