hiya, so recently brought Betty and her exhaust has been blowing at the manifold clamp, brought some exhaust paste, took the bracket off, went to loosen the gearbox bracket, only to find it doesn't exist :-/

So in the picture below you can see the bracket is on the exhaust but there is no where to bolt it too

Presumably I need one of these...

But wondering if / when I bolt it to the gearbox am I going to loose oil out of the box? Looks like I will have to undo the diff housing(?) bolts?
Also, what size bolt am I going to need to bolt the gearbox bracket to the exhaust bracket?

Sorry for the long post and thanks for the help! :-)

Should add it a '87 998, standard exhaust :-)

The first one is the one you want. You shouldn't lose any oil. Ideally you'll need two slightly longer 5/16 UNC bolts, perhaps an inch or 1 1/4" long. The original ones may be ok but be careful not to overtighten them.

Thanks for the replys, will order the bracket next weekend (waiting for pay day) :-)

Also, what sort of nut and bolt will I need to hold the exhaust bracket to the gearbox bracket? Unfortunately I don't have any spare nuts/bolts in the garage :-(

Before bolting anything more into that area why not deal with the failed selector seal? You'll only be taking it all off again to sort it anyway....

It's not too bad. If you don't have the aluminium ring in there it's a hour or so to do (you have to drain the oil). If the ring is in there it's more awkward as it can be tricky to get out; I had to drill the one in ours to get a grip on it with some pliers not helped by a glob of sealer put in at the factory (which was also a pain to clean out). It's more awkward than difficult.

Unfortunately it didn't completely solve the leak on ours as the outer end of the shaft had been scuffed so the oil seal doesn't seal completely.

I never drain the oil to change the selector seal, even without the alloy ring

Well in that case I will add a seal to the ever growing list! :-P

Thanks for the picture mk1 - all makes sense now! :-)

Whilst I have it up on the ramps I was gonna change the rear subframe mounts as well as one is knackered, firstly any tips for this job, and secondly, what's the difference (apart from massive price difference) between the two products below...

Ty John, was hoping that was the case considering the price difference!
