So I've been having a few problem, I took my mini down to bare metal and etch primed it with autotek etch primer shown here http://www.ebay.co.u...=item3f4009cc3a

Anyway its basically crap every time I stick masking tape near it it just peels off, can anyone recommend me a decent etch primer that they have used/tested.
I'll be sanding it back off before applying new.

I've got some of their black paint and its a bit crap really, Upol etch primer is quite highly regarded, I know someone in the trade who uses it.

I was thinking of just using acid 8, there aerosols are £12.99 or a litre to go though the gun at £28 not sure if 2 aerosols would go further or the 1lt in the gun.

I've scuffed the bare metal with 180 grit and still peels, degreased etc, the metal does end up quite shiny after scuffing, not sure if the shiny steel is the cause.

It shouldn't be. It just sounds like a poor primer to me.

The zinc primer i use goes straight onto quite polished metal that's been cleaned with a filament brush and adheres fine.

I would try again with a better quality etch

Cheers Ben think I'll just buy some acid 8, expensive but needs must as the topcoat depends on it.

MIPA do a nice high build etch primer, not had any trouble with that, covers nice and sticks well.

That's the one, both are pretty good, the non aerosol  one needs 2k thinners though.  I've used both of them and they've been great, you can brush on the tin one as well!!

Try ProXL, in my opinion way better than Upol acid etch 8. It comes with a way better nozzle than the crappy effort you get with the Upol stuff.

Also don't forget etch primer is used to give a grip for next coat it shouldn't be left any length of time without over coating.

Never had any problems with the Autotek etch primer.

Used it on mild steel and fibreglass, sand, degrease and then a light dust coat followed by a slightly thicker coat.

Had issues with UPOL etch primer in the past but I think that's down to be applying a too thicker coat, using light dust coats with no issues.

How thick are the coats you're applying?

Just enough to cover the steel then normal primer on top.
As soon as I put masking tape on it it peels maybe I'm doing something wrong but never really had this type of problem before.
